5D Mark III HDMI Out to External Recorder? Re: Framerates

I'm a bit confused.

When setting up the 5D Mark III, you can set the internal recording framerate and hdmi out framerate SEPARATELY.

So what happens if I select 24p internal and 60p external? Does the external recording record more frames or is it still just 24p?

Nope. You would also need to record different resolutions as the 5D3 only does 60P on 720 not 1080. That would be great if it did...but unfortunately you can not overcrank externally while recording another format internally.

So I would get an error? An error as in the camera won't allow me to have mismatching framerates? Is this true of other cameras?

There would not be an error. There is just not a method to select it. Canon just does not give any option for multiple frame rates.

On this note...I would love to see a camera company crack that nut. It would be great to capture slow motion and real time at the same time. There would be shutter issues though. If you are capturing footage at 1/48 (or 180 degrees) you would most likely want the shutter set differently for different frame rates. Note...180 degrees in 24P is different than 180 degrees in 60P...ect.

To relate...not even the RED Epic Dragon can do this. They have enabled frame ramping...but not multiple frame rates.

When recording at 24p the sensor is being read 24 times per second with a certain shutter speed. When recording 60p the sensor is being read 60 times per second at a certain shutter speed. They cannot be simultaneously performed. What you can do either in-camera or in post is to read the sensor at 60 frames per second and send that to external and discard a few frames to get 24p and send that to internal card. It will not be true 24p but might be useful for some. This can be done in post though so no point.

The frame rate is determined by how many frames the sensor is being read so you can't do two different speeds at the same point.
