I am doing a video editing job and noticed that the customer who shoots on a 5D Mark II had about 10 hours of footage....All .mov files. I dropped it on my Sony Vegas Pro 9 timeline and now Im getting allot of lagging. My hardware is i7 920 with 12GB or DDR 3 ram. My video card is HD 5750. Ive never had problems with my files from my HMC40 or GH1. Can someone help me out? I believe someone mentioned to use Cineform. Is that all I need? Thanks everyone in advance

It is not the H.264 that is rubbish (well, it is, but...) but the software which are unoptimized. Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10 can breeze through DSLR H.264 natively with no problem at all. Vegas Pro 10 will inherit these optimizations, but sadly Vegas Pro 9 will choke with DSLR H.264. Adobe CS5 can easily edit H.264 natively as well. For most other NLEs you are forced to convert to an intermediate codec. If you had an Nvidia card you could try Divide Frame. Otherwise, Cineform is a good option. Pesonally, if I were you, I would use either the CS5 of Vegas MSP 10 trial. By the time the trial is out Vegas Pro 10 will be out.

I just tried looking for the trial of Sony Vegas Pro 10, Cant find a link. Anyone?
Also I will probably buy the cineform till Sony Vegas Pro 10 comes out. Thanks

I heard in a Zacuto video most use either Cineform or ProRes, you're stuck with Cineform on Windows, right?

Are these equally good formats? It was also said they actually produced a better image in terms of dynamic range. Any other formats equally good?

Hey JoeJitsu,

You could also take a look at DVFilm Epic I. It lets you bring the native h.264 Dslr quicktimes right into Vegas 9 and start editing. It creates realtime Epic files in the background and gives you realtime editing. You can switch back to the native h.264 quicktime movies with a click of a button so you can render at full quality.

It's only $45 dollars and you can try a free demo as well. Here's a link to the demo and more infomation: http://dvfilm.com/epic/index.htm

Best,
Andy

I would give this a shot but does epic 1 handle 64bit Vegas?

Also on the new Sony hd 10 studio, is there "add" , "multiply" on the timeline? I want to drop after effects clips that's why. Thanks

Just go to the GrassValley site and download Edius Neo. I've been editing 3 realtime streams from my native 5D files. I'm now using Edius. 5.5, and in a couple of weeks, their 6.0 is coming out, which looks like a very nice update.

FCP sucks in this regard. In fact, I tossed it in the closet. Why do I have to waste time to encode to another codec, well, I don't.

I actually got a free one from when I bought my HMC40. I have it on my desktop ,just never used it. Only thing is I have after effects "effects" that I use on the SV9 , I hit "add" on the composting mode and it shows up on my clip. Thank you

Epic..was a faliure for me and a waste of money. Ceniform was the only thing that worked. Trufully...I just moved to Final Cut Pro. Just to many issues with Vegas.
