5D in Africa - Footage

These are some shots from our first test run of the 5D on recent trip to Africa.
We picked up the camera 2 days before jumping on the plane from Perth. Our main camera was a Panasonic HPX502.
There are a few issues with the 5D as a production camera, but we where impressed with what it could achieve considering its size and cost. All shots have been conformed from 30 to 25fps and no colour correction/grading has been applied.
These shots where taken on the first part of our trip near Karonga, Lake Malawi in June 09.

Wow, Thanks for sharing Bachman, I really think you took the full potential out of your trip to Africa. It's a memorable piece. Like a omniscient eye grasping the essence. By making the people staying still without any natural movement of everyday life, it enforces that feeling of the omniscient eye.

In side notes, I do feel that the shots you slowed down takes away our interest from the piece because it's choppy and it tells us: I wanted to have a slow motion shot but I didn't had enough fps to make it fluid.

Besides that, I tip my hat to you.

Thanks Loic.

I get your point about the slowed down shots, some shots like the waves have been slowed in post to about 70%, though actually they are all slowed down because of the conversion from 30 fps to 25. Im not a fan of slowing down shots in post normally but i felt it was in keeping with the "mood & feel" Be great if the 5D did 60fps

Yeah, the 60 fps 720 is the sweet spot for me, even with the HVX-200 I shoot in 720 60p. There seems to be a bigger problem of moire in 720 60P on the 7D though.

Gorgeous photography and with Africa colors, with them all. Can't you link us a HD version?

We did alot of aerials from choppers on this trip, we used both the 5D and the 502. Motion wise shooting 50p 720 on the 502 is hard to beat. Pretty hard with the 5D in a hand held situation being a light camera shooting 30fps from a jet ranger. Lenses aside, I reckon though the actual "picture" is better or shall we say "nicer looking" on the 5D than the 502. The 502 looks noisey and flat in comparison. Unfortunately some things like H.264, the Jello effect, drop frames, only 1 fps setting, no view finder, etc let the 5D down.

You know, if you asked me which camera id like to make a short film with, id have to pick the 5D even with all its failings, it just got such a great "look" when all said and done. You just have to work around it's faults.

What's your picture profile (neutral, faithful, portrait, custom..) setting? I'm guessing neutral or portrait. It has a just right color level look.

The 5D looks great when lighting is not too extreme (like bright sun light). I have a hard time trying to get a natural look on extreme sunny condition. With ND filters and polarizer to get it within 1/60 sec, it tends to cook the skintone.

Just thought I'd chime in here with a few thoughts.

First, I was very moved by that piece :)

I especially loved the shot where the tear suddenly slides from the child's eye... And the extreme close up with the flies crawling on his face... And the shot at 5:45. I could go on, but those are the ones that made me sorta do a double take when watching the piece lol.

I actually liked the choppy slow motion (except with the waves). Choppy slow motion lends a certain emphasis to the motion in a way that perfectly smooth high fps can't do. I think liked the way you used it here.
