5D III with Ninja 2. Color issues.

Hi there,

I just purchased a 2nd hand Atomos Ninja 2 for use with my 5D Mark III. However I notice a pretty severe green tint on the Ninja 2 monitor. I understood the "color correction" option in the Ninja 2 was supposed to resolve this but I see no difference with it on or off. There also seems to be some "banding" of some sort going on (almost like it's shot under a fluorescent light) in the shadows. No idea if these issues are related or not. I don't have another cable to try yet, but that will be my first thing to try (concerning the banding), but the color is also a concern.

I'm just wondering if others have experienced this and it's a noob mistake on my part, or if there's an issue with this device. The Ninja 2 firmware is 4.22 and the Canon fw is 1.2.3

I'll post this at the Atomos forum as well, but their forum appeares to be less visited.

Thank you!

Is the green tint also in the pro res files? or just the monitor?
Hi lars,
Thanks for your help. I ended up returning the unit because the screen had a malfunctioning issue (there were "lines" or "bands" going up and down the screen when I would move it around). I did some test footage but then I ran into an issue trying to get the footage onto my computer (Windows 7 Pro). My computer kept wanting me to format the drive. So alas, I was not able to confirm if the tint was present in both. But I THINK I recall reading that the tint is FROM the hdmi for the Canon, which would make me think it was both on the monitor AND recorded like that. I'll be picking up another one some time... hopefully it will be better. Atomos (on their forum) suggested that the color correction switch SHOULD correct the color in the Ninja, so it seems that was also not functional (in addition to the banding), but again, many people say this is not an issue and is just the way it is... so I honestly don't know.
Thank you again!

5D HDMI output is slightly greener than the internal recording, it can easily be fixed with a magenta WB bias or in post production, Atomos also try to correct this in-device. In short it's not your device error, that's normal. And to be honest, unless you really use a slow editing system that can't edit H.264 fluidly, or unless you need long recording times, then there's absolutely no image quality advantage to recording externally, it just doesn't make a difference. It's not to say the ninja is still a nice monitor and gives you the option to record higher quality files when you upgrade to other cameras in the future, so it's not bad to have one, just not for a 5D IQ pump, it doesn't do it.
