5D II vs 7D in Zacuto's episode 3 skin tone test

Hi,

The 7D was too flat. Seems as if the contrast settings go further than the 5DmkII. The 7D had terrible gradation and was even flatter than the film. There is such a thing as too flat, and reducing the contrast that much was unnecessary for that shot. Lost a lot of mid tone gradation that will never come back.

As for the colors of the 7D, the man was too yellow, and the women had too much magenta. Most of the cameras were bias either towards yellow/green or magenta/red, but the 7D was bias in both!

Indeed! I found this very interesting because I was always under the impression that the 7D and 5D had nearly the same image quality for video, and the only real variable was sensor size and iso performance. Apparently not, unless Zacuto messed something up (which I doubt).

i liked neither really. the 5D seemed to have more detail also.

that being said...as informative and interesting and eye opening this series has been (i for one loved it myself), alot of it is just "stuff" and great films are being made with all these cameras. So ...meh, still love my 7d.

For sure, not saying the 7D isn't a capable camera. I rocked a 60D for a while and I loved it! Just interesting that there was a difference.

Yes, the difference is notable.

I'll post some 5D and 60D comparison footage next month. They can coexist easier than trying to match some other cameras.

The compression in the compare video did some weird things, such as the green anomalies on the middle lady's neck in the Kodak film footage. So, everything has to be taken with a grain of salt and anything conclusive has to be tested by yourself in a way that meets your goals.

None of the cameras used in the test ever looked straight up awful. I think the shootout is useful in knowing what kind of anomalies can crop up depending on your camera choice, and with that knowledge in hand you can adjust your production to maximize the positive qualities of the image and minimize the negative aspects. With that being said I do prefer the AF100 footage to the Canon stuff, but they're not that far off in terms of final image.

5D resolves more detail / has higher resolution than 7D.

Bit funny when the +40 people talk "film is dead", like they are trying to score some points. Shootout brings out one important point though, that there is a generation growing up consuming the digital look. IMO not even Alexa is anyway near the subtle qualities of film. And, AF100 keeps looking like... bad.

I didnt know this. do you know why?

Well, I assume you already know non of the Canon DSLR's resolve 1920x1080. Why 5Dmk2 and 1D is sharper/bit more lines? Ask the engineers... I'd *guess* that larger-than-APSC means a larger reading area, also 5D having bigger heat issues (7D is an unique APSC case though due to dual processors + weather sealing), so a slightly (but still not) higher HD rez would mean a different processing. Also making sense in terms of the different behaviour moire/aliasing, as proven in the Zacuto shootout.
