5D and ND filters, please help!

B+W is one of the best makers of screw-on filters. Heliopan is also well-regarded. I have read that Singh-Ray makes good variable ND filters.

Tiffen.

I got a few of the multi coated Tiffen 82mm ND filters recently. They fit inside the Canon lens hoods, but you have to screw them on with the lens hood in position.

No, you don't need a mattebox, but use the lens hoods at least.

I slum it a bit. I have a Cokin P holder with a compendium hood. A set of 85mm Hi-Tech ND filters slot in, the set comes in 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 and with a small set of cheap lens rings fit all my lenses. They may not be quite as good as the very best, but they are a neutral grey. There's also a slot for a rotatable polariser. I use the cheap-as-chips Cokin circ-pol.
If Cokin are a bit too low grade for you, Lee do very good equivalents at a somewhat higher price.
