5600K Preset Not to my liking

It's on its way back...

It's on its way back...

... apparently someone didn't check the paperwork for my camera, so it's going back to Panasonic again, for a preset re-calibration...

... I'm going into camera withdrawal....

Jabour: yeah, actually I did that the first several weeks before I was successful in setting 5600 on Preset "B"... It works fine (no reason it shouldn't).. It is a "film guy" solution, though and probably not practical to everyone (they won't have the 85 in their kit)... The other drawback is that it will use up a tray in your matte box, and if you like to use a polarizer together with an ND grad, you've got a problem...

Interestingly enough, I've recently noticed that the factory preset seems to be less objectionable now - I don't know if I've just gotten used to it, or something has changed over time... Anyone else notice this?

let's not let this die until they come out with the new model and your camera is worth zip on market.

Ok let's try this a different way. Take your 500 outside. Point it at your white card with the white card in full midday sun.
White balance. Whats your color temp? On mine it will not go any higher than 4900k.
Now get out a piece of 1/4 blue. Put the piece of blue completely over the white card.
Now what do you get. Well I get 5800K. Now put the blue over only half of card so the camera sensor sees half blue half white. White balance again. Now I 5200K.
Ok every camera guy knows this old trick. But my question is why will the camera not go over 4900k when balancing without this trick. Every other Pro camera I use will see this white card without quarter blue in the 5000k range.

Panasonic, would you like this back so you can fix it? I believe it's still under warranty and this is a warranty item.

Davhud, why don't you just send a PM to Jan Crittenden, who's the product manager for the HPX500? Bumping this thread is pointless and annoying. You have direct access to the one single most influential person in the entire HPX500 world -- why not just use it?

By the same token Jan could e-mail me personally. This of course hasn't happened.
This has been going on for a long time. If they can't fix it I believe we should be allowed to return the cameras as defective merchandise under the lemon laws of our various jurisdictions. The silence from them is deafening. It really is a problem on what is supposed to be a professional piece of equipment. I believe keeping this in front of the public in this forum is the best way of putting pressure on them to fix this. I have refrained from posting on the other websites like cows, DVI, and CML PRoHD in the hope that we would get some resolution here. I really can't pitch this camera to my clients in it's present state. Right now I have to carry a portabrace white card covered with 1/4 blue on every exterior location I shoot with this camera. It gets puzzling stares from knowledgeable crew members and hard to answer questions from clients who are having a hard enough time with P2 workflow! A bad rep will kill this camera so they better move a lot faster than they have.

Hi,

Since this has little to do with the 5600 preset being slightly green, I suggest that you call Panasonic Service and talk with them about it. The rest of the cameras I have seen track manual white balance properly. I would also suggest that you should do the demo for the service guys to show them how you are making sure that the camera is indeed making the wrong temperature, with either a color temperature meter.

For the rest of you on this thread, the factory is still very much working on it and yes I do know that I said this before but we are a little closer today. Hopefully in the next week or so.

Thanks,

Jan

It really has lot to do with the preset because you really can't use the factory preset because it's wrong. You must manually white balance the camera for all exterior locations. Perhaps the 1/4 blue trick will also help some newer owners coming up from the 200 to achieve a good white balance with these cameras without too much gnashing of teeth. If you consider slightly green what we see in the German fellows post a few up from here good for you.

It also maybe just my camera. I invite any owners to perform the same test and post their results here. The camera reads out color temp in view finder. Is it wrong? When I'm pointing the camera at a white card in full midday sun it should read 5600k or there abouts. White can be subjective CT is CT.

First Color Temperature is not subjective, it is measurable, it is defineable and there are numbers that correlate to the temperature being measured. As I mentioned in my email before, it may just be your camera and thus you should contact the service center where they indeed have color temperature meters and can tell whether your camera is operating correctly outside of the preset issue, which is a wholly unrelated issue. This is being worked on and it should be resolved soon.

Best,

Jan

Pardon the missing comma. The sentence should read: White can be subjective, CT is CT.

The next time you have a camera outside at midday under full sun no clouds point it at a porta brace white card if you have one. Read off what the camera reads as a color temp. It should be 5600. Without manipulation my camera gives 4900k. I hope it's just my camera. Don't assume just because you white balance it's correct. Read the color temp in the viewfinder. It will help you get better images in the long run. oh btw try white balancing your sunset shot. lol

Hi Cocoa,

You are talking about the preset being green, that is this thread, yes it is green althrough this is the greeenist I have seen. This is what the engineers are working on. This will have a resolution I hope soon.

Best,

Jan

This is why I think you need to contact Panasonic. It sounds as if there is something wrong with your camera. Please I have said it three times now. There is something wrong with your camera. All of the cameras do not act this way.

Thanks,

Jan

As per Jan,

Mine have the strange 5600k preset, but manual white balance is perfect.
