<50mm prime lenses

I know you may not want to spend the money on the sigma 30mm, but it really is worth it and it will hold it's value.

This....

$400+ is expensive but the price is worth it for a NEW lens with Warranty. Think about that for a second when buying these 20+ year old lenses......

The truth is that these old lenses made of metal and glass have much less to fear if they have not been abused. And they allow to build a complete lens set of quality glass at a fraction of the cost.

I know each has its own disadvantages. Anyway I was searching on ebay and there are adapters that support focus confirmation but autofocus will never work. Do you know what they mean by

What they mean is that in order for the chip to give you a red light and a beep focus confirmation, you need to focus at an aperture wider than 5.6 (then you stop down to take your picture) otherwise there is not sufficient light and the focus confirm is not going to work.
You half press the shutter button and keep it pressed while rotating the focusing wheel, when the adapter thinks you are in focus you get the focus confirmation.
However, from my personal experience (2 or 3 of these cheap adapters) this doesn't work very well. I always get pictures that are almost in focus but not in focus.
I have also noticed that the same chip doesn't work well with all focal lengths (you may nail focus with a 50mm lens but if you put it on a 24mm or 200mm you'll be off).
There are expensive chips that enable you to fine tune the back focus etc. These may be good, but sometimes they cost as much as the lens!
Another disadvantage that I have with one of these adapters is that I get constant exposure flickering while in video mode and this almost destroys your clips. I am tempted to throw away the chip from this adapter...

What works best for me is to use an lcd viewfinder, enlarge at maximum (10x) on the lcd for fine focus then quickly go back to normal view for framing and shot my still. Focus accuracy is much much better for me like this. But maybe I have been using not great quality adapters.

I don't get the aperture thing, first of all adapters cannot know what aperture I'm using with manual lenses plus the sufficient light coming in with apertures smaller then 5.6 it depends on the situation. For example if I'm in daylight even with f/11 I can get enough light to get focus confirmation with moder lenses so I don't understand.

The focus thing is a big issue instead I'm ok with manual focus but if I manual focus then I need to know if the subject is in perfect focus :( I wonder why this happens, isn't the focus "metering" just a job made by the camera software, why would it confirm focus when the image is not sharp?

The video think is a BIGGER problem! What do you mean by flickering? Can you post a sample? And why does it have to do with adapters??

I'm almost changing my mind :(

Regarding the flickering: I have this with one particular adapter, that I tend to avoid for video. My other 2 (non focus confirm) do not have this.
By flickering I mean that even if the aperture and shutter speed are locked, the image suddenly becomes brighter for a fraction of a second, then comes back to normal. I have shot a timelapse and these exposure variations have produced one or 2 frames that have different exposure from the others. I tend to believe this is the fault of the adapter, since this doesn't happen with my other ones.
Regarding the focusing issue it is that I now have a workflow that works fine for me, so I don't need the focus confirm. I cannot tell exactly what went wrong for the adapter focusing confirmation, it just gives me the impression that my subject is almost in focus...
Regarding the aperture, it just doesn't work past some aperture. I can confirm this.

Anyway, these adapters aren't that expensive, you can probably try one and dumb it if you are not happy with the results, or keep using it ignoring the focus confirm function.

Ok this worries me since I mainly shot videos :( how wonder what could do that if the camera is in manual mode :( anyway I tried to just put the lens on the body just my hands and a noticed a different DOF position from the viewfinder and the live view (the real DOF of the saved picturs is the one from the liveview). could this explain your problem?

(check the 35mm adapters forum I have new pictures for you to see :)

thank your for your help

I've owned and tested the Mir 24n, the Nikon 35mm f/2, Nikon 35mm f/1.4, and the Leica 35mm f/2. I rank them in this order-

1 Leica 35mm f/2
2 Nikon 35mm f/2
3 Nikon 35mm f/1.4
4 Mir 24n

The Leica is just cinematic. The Nikon 35mm f/2 is good but not good enough for me to use on a feature. The Nikon 35 f/1.4 is as good as the f/2 at f/2 but can go to f/1.4 but doesn't look great at f/1.4. The Mir 24n isn't quite as good as the Nikons but close. I haven't used a 35mm Takumar but I have a 50mm and it beats the Nikons. I sold the Mir and I'm selling the Nikons for the Leica.

The Sigma 30mm is a great lens. I bought mine at KEH for 300 bucks in excellent condition. It was worth it IMO!

isn't the Leica like a lot more expensive?

There's a few Mir 24N on ebay. But aren't they taking advantage of the situation? They're all over $130-150. Isn't this overpricing?

Bid on a Nikkor instead. It's a little sharper, has better contrast and doesn't flare as easy.

hello,
is NIKKOR KOGAKU japan 35mm f/2.0 the same as the "classic" Nikon 35mm f2? It has Nippon written on it.
What do you think about the vivitar 28mm f2 compared to the nikon and the mir24n? Are all sharp full open and at infinity? I heard the mir 24n sucks at infinity
