50i using Cine_D gamma

Hi

I'm about to use the DVX100AE for a travel documentary.

I plan on shooting 50i (PAL) - as I need fast autofokus and the best possible low-light shooting.

I would however also like to use the Cine_D gamma.

Is there any arguments as to why not to mix interlaced with Cine_D gamma? I just wanna get as much information on the DV-tape as possible (also use the anam. lens). Then I can always deintelace and do colorgrading in Post...

Any inputs most welcome.

Best regards

What's the point of "capturing as much info as you can on the DV tape".... and then performing deinterlace in post?

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

Ugggg, No no no!. You should never deinterlace the dvx100. Please don't do it. It completely goes against the soul of the DVX. YOu should be able to focus by hand faster than any autofocus, and if your in low light, never use autofucus (well for good light either). YOu get only marginally better lowlight performance in interlace than you do with progressive, but you get an overall better visual representation than you will ever get shooting progressive than interlace. Plus, if you are going to de-interlace your footage you are basically throwing away half your footage :(

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

i guess by saying "de-interlace" Toke meant to put on a "film-look-filter" in post.

i need to do more tests, but i would also shoot a documentary on 50i instead of 25p if you expect to have a few "quick shots" where light and angle cannot be planned perfectly.

also 50i is not much more lightsensitive, but it is enough to give it the go in a run-gun situation.

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

The interlace modes gets you access to the GAIN function which would be the main advantage in a situation where you can't control the lighting but need the shot.

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

..light and angle affect 50i just as much as they do 25p. also on the "A" model there is also gain in the progressive modes. there is also no load time to switch between recording methods, so if you really actually encounterd a situation where you needed to use the 50i setting why not just store it right next to 25p set up how you want it, and take the 1/2 second to flip the dial before you hit record. if the light is that bad, it should blend fine with the 25p stuff anyway cause it would likely look bad either way. but imho i cant personally justify making an entire production look worse than it has to just for a couple short shots that may or may not come up and will likely look bad no matter what you do anyway if its about low light. but again, thats just my opinion. if you think shooting 50i will make your production look better , and be easier to make, by all means do the right thing :)

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

Yeah, do the right thing and shoot progressive, it will give you solid picture, far more solid then interlaced.

Last weekend I have shot a big party, shooting interlaced and progressive, the material will tell you the difference.

Documentary work. I have nothing aggainst watchin a documentary shot interlaced. What I wouldn;t do, unless this was very important to the narrative is add a later film look in post. Shoot video, leave it video, it's not a crime.

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

Wow... you guys sure like progressive! - And I surely understand. I'd love to shoot progressive as well - and would certainly do so if I was shooting a commercial or film or stuff like that.

I'll probably also shoot progressive whenever I have the DVX100 on a tripod and have the time to set a proper focus and so on.

However - I'm in doubt when it comes to reportage... situations where you just have to run along - no retakes - everything happens just once! Also when doing handheld I think the 25p video is a bit "jerky" - not as fluied. - I perfectly know why and all that - I'm just afraid it's a bit to much for the ordinary tv-audience.

Any input?

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

that completely depends the operator. and the equipment used, 25p doesnt autopmatically make things jerky. i shoot 24p all the time for run and gun type stuff, as mentioned earlier, manually i can focus faster than autofocus ever could, and i know enough about how to use the camera to keep things smooth.. the vest steday system doesnt hurt either ;) but even handheld its all great footage imho. again it all pends the operator.

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

Dear All,
Finally We have the 100A "Pal" version and they name the machine differently; "180a", and proberly because it was assemble in china & tend to market in China I guess, but that's alright cause I'm totally happy with its peformance, personily I love 25p mode, but some 0f my co-worker was complaint with that(Jerky/Film like style)... I'm totally understand their reason, it's there anyway to cut it down, and keep the progessive mode....also if not will it be "clean" when I master my footage into DVD/VCD or show those footage on a progessive monitor/Plasma TV....
Cheers/Daryl

Re: 50i using Cine_D gamma

DVD/VCD won´t help. a proggressive monitor does help though.

but what if the DVD is played back at a TV later?
