500 w/ Canon J33aX11B

Hey guys,

I've got a recurring shoot where I need a truly long lens - about 2/3 the distance across a soccer field and I'd like to know if any of you have used the Canon J33x11B IAS lens on the HPX-500 before.

Last year I rented the newer HD version the HJ40x10B w/ stabilization, while it was a great lens and worked wonderfully, it was a pain in the arse to secure one for rental in my market - had to travel into NYC to get it.

Now, I have an option to purchase the older SD version of the lens J33ax11 for less then 10% of price for the new HJ40x10 lens!!!

How does this lens look on the 500 in HD?

Do I need to be concerned that it is not a CAC lens given the 500's chips?

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks

It's not a direct comparison, but I can say that my SD Canon J20x8 has done very well on the HPX shooting at 720/24pn. Not perfect though, CAC problems showed up in test shots--shooting the sun on 2x through leaves on a tree in late afternoon, and sunlight on bright chrome at 11am. Both shots showed purple fringing. Test before production, then you have a better idea on what to avoid.

go for it. do your clients sit around and stare at still frames to see if there are microscopic lines surrounding your subjects? No way. Mine don't anyway... Get the SD lens. I shot an hour long documentary on SPEED channel HD with my SD lens on my HPX500. Looked great. But that's because I hired an amazing DP to get great shots, amazing lighting setups, creative framing angles, and we attempted to get the best stuff out of our talking heads moments. sure, the HD version of that lens is amazing. it should be for the price. but for 10% of that price, that's unbelievable. and my experience with SD has been very solid. that's my vote anyway.
good luck either way.
