$500 rebate gone?

$3500 after rebate- man you get allot of camera for that price :)

My opinion is it should be at least $1000 rebate. I sold my AF100 and am not looking back. It was a good camera for about 9 months, then it was outdated and just didn't make sense anymore. I'm waiting until NAB to replace it, but I'm leaning towards the FS700.

Hi Jan could you give us a day that us AF100 folks should look at that doesn't effect the AF100 but will be of great interest to us? Those who own a Sony FS100 got a hint?!?!?

J/K when it comes it will come :)

I know better, but here I go anyway....

Congratulations on your recent dump and good luck with whatever new camera you choose. Is the AF100 everything to everyone at the price they want to pay? No, no camera is. What it is, is a large sensor camcorder with professional controls that can interface with just about every 35mm format lens on the planet- for under $3500. And yes- that's a deal. Does it have areas of needed improvement? Of course, but again- every camera does. If a new AF ever comes out, when the post-release honeymoon is over, people will be whining about how it doesn't do this or doesn't have that. No matter what you decide on, there is always something better out there- it's the nature of the beast I guess. I myself love this camera- warts and all :)

Yes- potential buyers like the OP need to hear input from current owners who appreciate the AF's strengths, as well as former owners who didn't care for it. A balance of pros and cons are best, and they will find them- like your pervious thread on why you were selling. But the OP wan't asking about previous user experiences.- they are interested in buying and want some info on the promotion. And so you are sort of looking back when you stick around the AF forum to remind people how "outdated" the camera was for you.

You are right, it was and is a good camera for some, I just found a lot of my work heading other directions, and ended up renting either 5D's or F3's. My expectations were high for the AF100, maybe too high. Currently the only camera I have is a GH2 and that and rentals will have to tide me over until I get a true replacement. I've been combing the forums more than normal lately on the hunt for a replacement. I'm thinking I might get 2 cameras to replace it, the D800 and maybe the FS700, but I'm not 100% on that yet.

Well. The AF-100 was good enough for me to win three Telly awards and be a finalist in the Shoot it Share it. It gets major props at the broadcast station I work at. At the price this camera is selling for now with the extended rebate its a bargain. I paid $5K and that was still a great deal, so now the price as it is now is a even better.

Didn't a kickass feature get shot with the AF-100? :)

Hi Brian,

I saw your thread about selling your AF100 and your plans to spend $9000 for a new camera is a good plan I suppose. But if you are saying that the AF100 is outdated because it doesn't compare to a $9000 camera, I am not sure that is a fair comparison. When you start to compare cameras, you need to look in the same price range and in its price range it is still very competitive. We are just beginning to see the fruits of the labor from the shooters and the camera becoming more mainstream and frankly I think the footage that I am seeing is pretty awesome and very viable. There is no reason to lose the faith in this camera, it is still one of the best engineered cameras in its price range.

Jan, can you give a swift kick to Panasonic Canada, and get them to pony up for some of these rebate deals. I've been hearing about these sweet discounts you guys give out since I first started on DVX, and never once has something materialized up here.

I'm really on the fence re af100 vs. fs100. I won't compare the fs700, as I agree that is a price point jump, If budget allowed it might be different. Both of those cameras are fairly close price wise, at full retail. The sony here is not 1/3 more counting discounts, as there is no discount. Neither is perfect, and they don't share the exact feature set, They are both large chip camcorders, that are certainly a step up from dlsr's, but the design approach couldn't be further apart. It is up to the user to determine which set of compromises they can live with more.

Hi Jan,

There are 2 cameras in that class, the AF100 and the FS100. Both have pluses and minuses. The AF100 has SDI and an ND wheel; where as the FS100 has a better sensor which leads to better color, less noise, and not to mention it's a little bigger. For a better image the FS100 is king, for usability the AF100 might be the better choice. Both have poor codecs, and I've run into major issues in post with each. Because of this, I've come to the conclusion for cameras in this class, recording externally is the best and only option for me. For under $350 you can get a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 and this device not only records high bitrates, it also can turn an HDMI signal into an SDI signal. This means since I only want to record externally, the AF100 loses it's SDI benefit. Now the only benefit with the AF100 in this class is the ND wheel. To me this means the AF100 is second (or last) in the class for my uses, I will sacrifice the ND wheel for a better image. That said, yes it is possible to get great images from the AF100, and I have. Now if you want to look in other classes like the new breed for DSLR's, you have the D800 (which is cheaper than the AF100), the D4, and the 5DMIII (which is also cheaper than the AF100). With the new 5D you can not record externally so that is out of the question for me. As for the 2 Nikons, you can record externally, and guess what? with the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 you now have SDI. The Nikon D800 + Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 = Full frame (that can also be cropped), according to DXOMark it has the best sensor in any DSLR class, records a 220mbps codec (even uncompressed if you want), and has SDI (via Hyperdeck Shuttle 2). It seems this combination is cheaper, better, has more options, and smaller than the AF100. The only negative is no ND wheel. This could be considered the same class as the AF100, but Panasonic, Sony, and others don't want to open that can of worms and it's too bad. As for the FS700, yes I agree that is in a different class for sure. As of today I think I'd get both the D800 and the FS700. I do hope Panasonic comes out with something new at NAB tho.

Actually I just renewed it. Dealers may be just getting the bulletin about the continuation.

Be Happy!

Thanks for confirming this. I had heard about it being extended and called Panasonic Sales yesterday. They had no idea what I was talking about. If I can unload some of my outdated gear in time I will be taking advantage of the second chance.
