..... where do I load the tape?

MUHAHAHahahahaaaa :D

1st thoughts - feels solid, not a cheap build or "off balance" as one review mentioned. With Fuji 2x & AB brick, felt great on shoulder. No cards yet, so I'll post back with ease of recording via MacBookPro (hopefully).

11pm: stole a few minutes from editing to play w/ 500 & Mac... Scopebox happily recorded some 1080i. Fantastic on-set tool for waveform, digz as you go, etc. Found the focus assist graph to be fast & intuitive to use. Back end of the beastie is quite the "wide load"... gonna have to pull out the BetaSP to see which is "thicker in the end". BUT, great cable connections, all with covers. Got to read up on the Fuji's "shot box" zoom feature, as well as the "quick zoom" (push a button, it whips in focusing, release & it whips back to where it was). Thinking I'm gonna wish there were 3200/5600 white balance positions on the external switch, instead of switching PRST temp. via menu.

About the 3.2K <-> 5.6K mode change - could not agree more. Even more than people's concerns about P2, the first thing they say is "why isn't color temp on a switch?".

If Panasonic *ever* generates a firmware update for the 500, it should include this modification - user button selectability of color temp.

And while I'm wishing for the moon... Functionality that allows direct record from 1394 to a G-Technology Mini drive. Like that would ever happen...

there is these presets - just go to preset and then click the white button switch in the front - it will change from 3200 to 5600

I must be dim. I know what you say is true for the DVX & HVX, but in the 500, I have only seen 5600 in the menu. I'm looking at page 20 in the manual, and the AWB/ABB only does that (AWB/ABB setting, not preset selection). If there is an undocumented feature, please illuminate me!

Thanks,

Yup - You're absolutely right - you have to be in "preset" mode for that to work. Wish the documentation was better on that. THANKS!!!

Grin... actually, the doc says it plainly: "turning the AUTO W/B switch to AWB toggles between 3.2 & 5.6" (slight paraphrasing - page 51)
I think I'm going to rent a room for the weekend, lock the door, shut the drapes, and go thru EVERY PAGE of the manual.... lol.

I have read the entire manual twice, and I am still learning things.

I just finished reading Barry's HVX book too - man, my head hurts. But I am beginning to make sense of things.

So much camera... so little time.

yeah, it was a mind-bender coming from SD tape cameras to this in one step. MUCH easier for those already using HVX.
