50 hours and growing process time!!! What's wrong?

I have an edited program of standard def 4:3 material about 30 minutes long. I exported it from FCP using Compressor set for 90 minute, fastest compression. I set this up last night and have come back this morning to discover that the whole process is going to take 48 more hours. I just looked again 4 hours later and now it says 50 hours!

I am working on a 1.25 GHz mac laptop with 2 GB memory. Do you think the time this is taking is reasonable? Something seems terribly wrong to me.

I am using FCP 5.1.4 and OS 10.4.11 and Compressor 2.3.

After running all night, an FCP progress bar indicates frame 14428 is being processed. This is only about 8 minutes of programming.

What could I do to make this faster? Should I export a reference movie from FCP first and import that into Compressor, rather than exporting directly from FCP to Compressor? Should I use Toast instead?

Thanks for any insight you all may have.

I've never had much luck exporting directly from FCP using Compressor. I always export a FCP movie, and then open Compressor by itself and drop the new video file in. A 30-minute program should not take that long.

Are you using and external drives at all, or is this all being done on your laptop's internal HD?

Try rendering out a video from FCP to the drive, then use Compressor by itself. Every time I've tried to export from FCP using Compressor (OSX 10.4.1 and FCP5), it's locked up.

Yeah, I exported a reference movie (to the external drive) and opened it with Compressor. Looks like it will be processed in about 45 minutes.

Thanks.

It's actually even faster if you export a self-contained movie first from FCP and then drop that into Compressor. It also means FCP won't be tied up forever feeding frames to Compressor.
