Please help me to understand this - 25 fps is normal speed, right? 50fps should be slow motion, right? But when shooting 1080 50p I don't get slow motion, just a normal speed video. Am I misunderstanding something here?
If you are editing in a 25fps timeline you can right click and interpret the footage from 50 to 25fps which will play back slower (shooting with a faster shutter will help too) . If you want try and achieve some intense slow motion shots without using a high speed camera check out the twixtor plugin for after effects - it duplicates frames and mimics 1000fps shots but has some serious limitations.
Hope that helps dude. Also first post. I think I'll like these forums
OK, thanks, that explains. It is slow motion but is not played as such. I just wonder, if I shoot in S&Q mode (also 50fps) on my Sony FS100 it plays it back as slow motion in camera as well as in FCPX. Why one 50fps is played in slow motion but another 50fps not...
I've seen Twixtor mentioned a lot but never tried it myself.
Framerate only defines the speed of temporal sampling, nothing more.
50p is not slow motion per se. Neither is 10000000p for that matter. You only get slow motion when you replay a higher framerate footage at lower speeds. That is, you reinterpret a certain framerate as a lower framerate, thus increasing playback time (and, incidentally, slowing motion). You can play 25p at 12p and still get slow motion. S&Q on the fs100 simply hints the camera that you want it to playback the footage at half the speed, hence the slow motion effect.
