5 minute b/w short (in danish)

This is a 5-minute short I DP'ed a couple of months ago for a friend of mine who is using it to apply to film-school (he directed and wrote the script). It was shot on the DVX100B in Squeeze mode and my friend graded (B&W) and edited it with FCP.

Personally I'm not too happy about the handheld "dolly" shot behind the couch - and there are a few other things I would have edited differently.

But please feel free to comment on the DP work! ;-)

EDIT: Here's the link - (Right-click and Save As - 55 Mb Quicktime)

Very nice, I really enjoyed it!

Beautiful camera work, creative yet consistently stylized.
The wide-angle "photo" shots work very well. (The accompaning sound effect lacks realism in my ears though...or maybe it's too realistic )

Personally I'm not a big fan of the slightly "glossy" grading - but I guess it goes well with the theme.

Acting was good too, except for one line that kills it for me. The "Hepburn" sentence made me cringe - it just doesn't seem believable to me.

I'm nitpicking - overall a very nice short.
Hope your friend gets accepted.

PS: 15 dage til udsalg i Birger Christensen....jeg kunne vel ikke få Dr. Philipsens telefonnummer? :)

Thanks a lot for the kind words. Funny you mentioned the thing about the "Hepburn" line... My girlfriend said the exact same thing ;-)

PS: God kamp i januar - jeg ender nok også selv med at få brug for Dr. Philipsens telefonnr :-D

I didn't understand it at all (obviously don't speak danish) but I really like the cinematography in this one. Nice use of a wide angle, and I like the grainy black and white opening of the women walking up the steps. It could of been a little smoother, but I understand how hard it is without a stedicam.

You're right about the tracking shot though. Very shaky.

Overall, though, good work. The story seems interesting. Can you give any pointers on how to get the grainy feel?

I know the director/editor added filmgrain in Final Cut. Propably by using a plug-in of some kind. I'll ask him what settings he used.

Thanks for the comments - much appreciated :)

The story is about this woman that's coming home from a Shopping Spree out on the town and obviously she's she's been seeing a therapist about the problem of being a shopaholic. She's been on a 30-day "rehab" and apparently she's gone mental - which you'll see in the end of the film ;-)

Hehe. The Hepburn thing is actually a very "big" thing regarding fashion. Hepburn was - and still is - a style icon and "connoisseurs" are still relating to her when they talk about fashion. It was a conscious choice regarding the back story of the character... :)

Perhaps a bit "too inside", I know, but anyway.

Thanks for the kind words btw. :-D

Well, I liked this. Nice little short. Production wise, the best part for me was the audio (even though it's subtitled!). Lately I've been hearing a lot of bad audio. Did you use a lavalier mic? Some nice shots, but I guess this was more of the dogma-esque hand held style in terms of that, which works here. But it looks fine.

The ending wasn't 100% IMHO. I felt a little "lead over and shown" i.e the hammer shot, and even then, I didn't grasp "a point". I'd like to see more of a connection between the shopping and the dead guy. Also, there's a lot of room to play around and get clever in that whole time she's talking. Maybe some more clues or wierdness from her. Just some more so that at the "punchline" it's more of an effect. Here I felt like it built up to a somewhat flat ending. Hmm, the staging at the end was a little off somehow. Not sure about the choice of how to present the dead guy. Took me a bit to realize he was really dead. Maybe: the TV's on, he's in front of it dead, but he's not looking quite exactly at it as he was. And more dead. :zombie_smiley: Anyway, keep 'em coming! I don't bother posting to vids I don't like, so cheers! And scratch my first comment...my favorite part was Maria!:love4:
