5 Big Reasons I'm still waiting for the Canon 5D Mark III

I thought the same until I used one, not sold on it until it gets a decent zoom lens.

You are probably trying to make it do somethign its not supposed to.

Its about perfect at what it is designed to do. Take based, studio shooting. its NOT a field ENG camera. its a TERRRIBLE ENG camera.... TERRIBLE!!!! Pretend its a Arricam 435/ALEXA/RED. Anywhere you would use that, you can use the F3 perfectly.

Anyhow, back to the 5DmkIII and why people wont buy anything till its released.

I totally respect the "I'm waiting for... X" and it's even reasonable. The thing here though is... remember what made 5Dmk2 a bomb? 1080p with interchangeable lenses. Oh, woah! Revolution. Sure thing.

But... what's the revolution this time? It *will* have a mirror. It *may* improve video quality and be comparable to GH2/AF100, but far from certain. It *will* be a DSLR, and Canon would be stupid as hell if they made it a superb videocamera, cus then they would damage their own market.

What about we all stop rotting away in front of the computer and get out and produce actual content with what we have. The next "revolution" i can tell you right now will be 3D, wich will need time to find its place. Remember, we are NERDS; your audience is not (unless it's James Cameron viewing it). Hell, do people even select HD on youtube? No? Right. There you go. Now get out and shoot.

no YOU get out and shoot!! I'm busy spending my time in forums so that I can postpone the work that my script needs!! damn it, I got it wrong again...

in a more serious note...

what I expect from the 5D3 is amazing image quality with lots of missing features (H.264 4:2:0 codec, no XLR, no ND wheel, everything that ML has to add) but with an unbeatable price for such IQ ($3K)
the only competitor I see for that right now is the FS100, which sells for $5K; so I wouldn't call that a "revolution" by any means, but it's a nice option, specially for people on a tight budget (like myself)

oh, and by the way: I can't wait to see that same IQ (read: digic V), but on an APS-C sensor, on the 650D or 700D, for under $1K

I wish they would take the pixel count of the 5DmkI and make it with modern technology. Imagine that. 12.3MP, with big giant light gulping pixels.... oh i miss my MKI....

You're right, it's awesome. I have one. It's called a Nikon D700.

Keep running that megapixel race all by yourself, Canon. -.-

Dear Canon, please continue to be revolutionary.

first DSLR (even though it sucked) : Nikon
first video DSLR (even though it sucked) : Nikon
realizing the megapixel war was over, releasing a 3rd gen camera with the same # pixels (just much larger) as the 2nd gen camera: Nikon

Heres the thing though. Heat. In order for the coming MK lll to give you a non moire, no line skipping image, and get real HD in the process the chip would have to be optimized for motion. That means alot of heat in that little body so Canon will either enable their version of a better compression scheme out of HDMI where you will need an external recorder or redesign the body. Either way you are now in FS100 territory. So just go with the Fs100.

I don't buy that "optimized for motion" sensor & data pipe would produce more heat.

If anything, the 5D II has to read 21 million pixels (or however many are left after line skipping) AND then downsampling on the fly and record them, whereas the FS100 just has to read its 2 (2?) million pixels and record them. That should require LESS data throughput & produce LESS heat. Plus it doesn't have a mechanism capable of raising and lowering a gigantic mirror 5 times per second.

But it costs twice as much instead of the same or less. Film industry premium is lame.

The gh2 has proven that you can get a dslr with nearly no moire, aliasing, true hd resolution, no time limit, no overheating etc... in a very very small body for les than $ 1000. More so without impeding the photo image quality (see dpreview review compared to the 7d for example). So just give all the above plus a better implementation of the codec and hdmi uncompressed output and you have a very good evolution of the HDslr and keep the momentum going for Canon in this market. Just the middle ground, nothing radical like xlr, sdi output and evf that could alienate the (pure) photographers market. But a solid if not revolutionary evolution of the video side. For me the gh2 proves that you can have a dslr hybrid that does not compromise the photo or video side. I think Canon is not stupid, they are not going to alienate any segment of the market, even if video side is smaller, it is by no mean negligible.

The GH2 is mirror-less and uses a smaller sensor. I'm sure that comes into play when talking about the differences.

Perhaps for heating, because the sensor is bigger (some would say that the gh2 camera body is also much smaller) . Apart from that I can't see how a mirror box is going to affect image quality.

Well, absolutly it would. the RED, ALEXA, F3, FS100, etc all have cooling systems, to deal with the heat generated by the chip. The F3 has a fan, so does red, and the Alexa has a oil based radiator/fan combo. You need it. The 7d overheats, and the 5D does as well, it just doesn't have a temprature indicator. The signal processing architecture to properly debayer and down sample a 5k image to 1080p is intensive. Jamming it into a 5D sized body, would cause heat issues.

There is no free lunch right now. The 5D would have to be 4x the size to accommodate the heat sink. (Think FS100). Maybe in 5 years they will figure out a way to make the electronics small/efficent enough.

Maybe the reason the Fs100 costs twice as much as the Canon is because with the Canon you're only getting problematic Standard definition resolution in video mode. Seems like pricing is justified to me especially when you add fs100 xlr audio and practically noiselss gain into the mix.

Hmm...

The AF100 has 1080p with 4:2:2 color SDI and HDMI out, XLR in for audio, actual TIMECODE recorded with video, better picture quality, zebras, SMPTE bars, etc...

If you're looking to use it for shooting video, it's actually worth 2x as much. Heck it's probably worth 3x as much!

And the Canon will beat it hands down for stills.
