5.4mm GoPro lens - dont get ripped off

There are several online vendors selling "5.4mm GoPro lens" (which are flat lenses removing the fish-eye look from your GoPro) and they are selling them for $375 or in that ballpark range.

First and foremost, these lenses (and the others of various focal lengths) aren't made for the GoPro. They are actually manufactured and advertised by the manufacturer as lenses for small security type CCD cameras. They do however fit nicely into the GoPro 3+ Black and Silver camera because the lens mount threading and size happen to be the same as is used in the CCD cameras they are meant for. These lenses do produce some nice, non fish-eye images when used with GoPro cameras. But if you are using the 5.4mm or higher focal length replacement lens on your GoPro and are flying it with a multicopter, make sure you have well balanced props, engines and so forth because this lens will magnify any jello effect on your footage from vibrations of the multicopter.

Secondly, if you do decide to purchase one, you dont have to pay $375 or any such nonsense for this lens. All these companies are getting them from china for around $100 and if you look around, you can find them from one US vendor for around $155 or so. A vendor making $55 profit per lens for the trouble of ordering them in bulk from china is definitely a fair price. A vendor making $275 or more profit on the same lens is a total rip off. There is nothing wrong with making a profit, but one of the most well known companies that are selling these for $375 is trying to strong arm or threaten anyone else that is trying to sell these cheaper because he doesn't want to lose his easy money train (or perhaps be found out how much he has ripped people off for) and that reason alone prompted this post. And don't let that company tell you these are special made for them cause they aren't. In fact, here is the 3rd link I found on page 1 just Googleing "5.4mm ccd lens" where you can see a couple Chinese companies advertising the exact same lens for CCD cameras: http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?fsb=y&IndexArea=product_en&CatId=&SearchText=1%2F2.3+inch+F2.5+M12+10MP+CCTV+lens+5.4mm

Finally, if you do decide to get one of these somewhere that doesn't charge $375 for them, be warned that there are 2 versions of the 5.4mm lens and getting the correct lens DOES matter.

1)The "IR" version is meant for putting on CCDs filming at night where there is a infrared light shining in the area - this is the WRONG lens and you don't want it for daytime shooting. If you purchase this lens by mistake, you will get footage that is bleached pink like this:

2)The "IR CUT" version is the CORRECT version that you want for putting on a GoPro to film in the daytime.

See the sample photo below so you can tell the difference between them:

Good luck!

No.

My friend Mark has a RageCams mod, which runs about $400.00, and there is a big thread at RCGroups about these 5.4mm mods. This one has been mentioned a number of times, and people are providing good reviews.

I have a problem with the install. Taking a wrench and heating gun to a $400 cam is a little daunting for me.

You dont need a heat gun, I just used a pair of plyers. There was some crunching sounds and the far edge of my original gopro lens is nasty looking, but is cosmetic and has no negative affect on the actual image coming from the lens. Once you pull the original out, putting this 5.4mm one in is a breeze. in fact you only screw it in 2 or 3 turns (not all the way) to get proper focus.

I am going to verify this, but I believe it is compatible just with the 3+, not the 3.

yup. That is what i'm a bit not comfortable to play with. I have 4 gopro 3 but only 1 3+. Can't mess up the only one i have. :) Do you by any chance know where to find the step by step to install this lens?

I'm glad this was posted, the M12 situation has been a rip off for a long time now, there's making a profit and then there's taking the p##s.

I speak as someone with 4 GoPros all but one I've stripped, I've got a Ribcage on one and have been trying for what must be a year different M12 lenses, I bought a couple from RageCams both costing me serious money to find they were too poor quality to be used, they flared so badly and light source at all get in or near the lens would make the footage all but unusable. I did tell RageCams the lens was no good, but almost a year on they still sell the lenses they know have problems. I did ask them why recently on Twitter but didn't get a straight answer.

You can see the test I'd done on one of their lenses here:

One word of warning if you see examples of M12 lenses on Vimeo, always look for light sources and look out for tell tales cuts when say a pan is cut just before the sun comes into shot for example.

they flared so badly and light source at all get in or near the lens would make the footage all but unusable.

I think that all these other focal length lenses are made with plastic elements except for the 5.4mm which is made with real glass. But this hammers home one of the points I made in this original post - these arent made for the gopro, they are made for security type CCD cameras that arent designed for professional video and thats why the quality isnt as high as you would expect from something that would be specifically designed for the GoPro. And also why nobody should pay the rediculous price that ragecams and others are charging for them since they dont actually cost anywhere near those prices.

I've got my lens, just got to get a Ribcage in the air on a gimbal then I can test it.

Sounds like if I take out the foam backing, it will still fit in the waterproof housing.0

But the modification is not reversible, right? You can't cleanly reinstall the original lens?

Yes you can put the original lens back in if you want.

I got my replacement lens from http://www.ostrc.com and I've installed it onto my Ribcage modded GoPro, the Zenmuse isn't strong enough for modded GoPro's so it'll be going on the excellent FY-G3 gimbal.

By the way this is a normal Hero 3 Black Edition, the lens works fine with the Ribcage at least.

Hello everyone, I just registered tonight just so I can chime in on this topic regarding the 5.4 lens. I also have a love for aerial video and fly a Phantom 2 Vision PLUS. I bought it as soon as I saw the footage, it was a done deal. The thing I didn't like was the fisheye lens. So I started to look into it and found YouTube videos showing the footage shot using the 5.4mm lens. I was then sold on it.

So I go on eBay and got blown out of my socks. Not only did I find it being sold for $375, I found it being sold for $575. Now, that's a ripoff. I say, people who purchase the lens and install at these prices are enabling those to perpetrate the rip. I just say NO.

After a few hours of investing it on the internet I found the same lens for $98 plus $5.91 shipping. Same lens, even the same picture used by those bandits. I then haggled a lower price and ordered the lens. The bad news it comes from China and the wait is incredibly long. But, so be it.

So, I called the RageCam company and asked how much would they charge if I provided the lens. I was told it would be $490!! I just had to ask how do they justify that rate. He told me to consider it like a doctor performing surgery. In their video showing the GoPro install, they use a steak knife and a pair of pliers. I'll repeat myself, a steak knife and pliers. Guys, if a surgeon used a steak knife and a pliers on me for surgery, I would come out of it walking with a limp and talking with a lisp. They're not even the tools of the trade. A steak knife!

In my case with the P2VPlus you remove a total of 6 tiny screws and a ribbon cable connector and unscrew the lens. The install took me, maybe 20-30 minutes (including focusing). Do the math. That would be $980 an hour!! How crazy is that. Now that's a rip-off. If we stop paying, they would start lowering prices when they see the lenses just sitting on their shelves. Do the install yourself, just go slow and be careful. You can do it, I did.

I cannot tell anyone what to do, I can only share my experience and what I've done to keep my hard earned money in my pocket and not become a victim. I also, can tell you all where I shopped to get the lens and how to install the lens. It's really not complicated at all. Gimme a shout if you need my help.

Gee, I feel better now that I got that off my mind. I hope we all come to our senses and not help provide those looking to part us from our money, any longer.

Bada Boom

I just did my Hero4 last week with the lens from securityzone or some place like that. Took about a week for it to get to the U.S. Overall a smooth operation, just go real slow and make sure you don't pull out any wires or rip any ribbon cables. Some people recommend just twisting the old lens out without taking the camera apart, but I found it much easier to remove the lens mount itself and use two pairs of pliers to break the glue. Supposedly just twisting the lens from the camera can twist and shift the (plastic) mount inside. Afterwards, I went to the hardware store and bought a large rubber washer with a 1/2" inner diameter. It was too big outside diameter, so I just cut it with a scissors to fit inside the gopro lens housing cover ring. Keeps dirt and light out of the lens cavity.

I got it working just fine, and the lens I bought came with a little threaded retainer ring I used to secure it once properly focused. It really helps to use a BIG monitor or in my case a computer screen to focus. I had trouble with a 7" when getting it just right. The lens looks good. There is a little bit of pink vignetteing on the left side, but not terrible and I was able to minimize it with a simple color correction mask. Most people wouldn't even notice.

Sharpness is good. I don't think its quite as sharp as the original Hero4 lens, but darn close. The non-fisheye is worth the trade off, and being able to shoot 4K with a narrower field of view than the stock "Wide" setting is great for me. 4K down scales nicely. We'll see how it looks sending it up into the skies.

With some time and the peau productions YouTube video for guidance, I think most people could do this. For the price some are charging for the upgrade labor, you can at least get 2 tries at it!
