4mp camera

would be cool if there were a small device that allowed connecting nikon lenses to it and recording to a computer via firewire, operated 100% from software on that computer

Even the widest nikkors are probably long telephotos on it though...

can someone clarify the lenses thing for me (or refer me to a post about this).

i have nikon 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.4.
but always hear about things like:
"it is stupid to ask for nikon mount for the scarlet camera"
"you will be at * magnification if using nikons on SI-2k, and no wide angle"

i'm not sure i understand properly what all these things mean. what exactly are those limitations of these lenses?
- do they relate to sensor size? (i dont get it, si-2k is 2/3 sensor as i understand, but even canon mark 5d II is full frame sensor and these lenses can be used on it just fine)
- or is it due to a resolution? and if so, what max resolution can these nikons handle? what is the min. acceptable resolution for movie theater screen? 1080p?

thx

its not the lens, it's the sensor. your 35mm on the d90 is really a 52.5, your 50mm is really a 75 and your 85mm is really 127. you still get the same dof, but your fov is cropped making it a longer lens than it really is. it's just magnified by 1.5. on a 2/3 it'll be magnified way more, dunno how much, but from the sound of it a 20mm would be 60mm.

yes, it's the sensor size. the lens always projects the same image, right? what happens if the sensor is half the size? that's right, you only see half the image.

yes, resolution is also an issue. still lenses typically resolve around 100 lines per mm, that means only 1000 lines, or 2000 pixels, on a 3/2" sensor, quite a bit less than 3k. on dx the same number is 4800, higher than the d90 sensor supports, and pretty much the same as the scarlet s35 sensor which is 5k. however, it's definitely not a problem to have slightly less resolution in the lens than on the sensor, which a century of 35mm filmmaking with rather crappy lenses by today's standards has shown.

thank u.

how do I find the resolution specs for a given lens. is there an exact formula or it varies per different still lenses?

also 1 line means 2 pixels?

This one says color, so that's cool. I'm assumin' it's similar to the SUMIX, with video outputing through Gigabit Ethernet or USB2.0? \

Talk about a shortage of info.

Edit: I do see a choice of F and C mounts... Strange.

Eh... 5D MK ii...

Having to build a rig around these solutions makes it a bit of a hassle. Even if one unit cost say 2k, you spend another 2k+ to get it where it needs to be for shooting, then a little more for odds and ends you didn't calculate to begin with.

It's weird how many holy grails are floating around but none are actually THE Holy Grail.
