4K2HD: Yellow Cast in blown highlights

It happens at certain White Balance settings. When I hit the button to set white balance based on image, the yellow cast appears for lower Kelvin WB values.

As I move the camera to different lighting and hit the AWB button to set to each, the yellow cast appears and disappears.

Using Slog2
4K2HD
Latest firmware

This looks scary, did you try to re-update the firmware?

Edit: Just tested again and the issue seems to have disappeared. May have been a fluke somehow, or a randomly-occurring issue.

Well, I updated it twice at the very beginning (second time unintentional). But no, I haven't updated it again since I noticed this issue tonight.

Maybe I should do some further testing to see what more I can learn about it.

Weird... I will test if i can replicate that issue if i have time today. Glad it disappeared, such things happening randomly is not a good thing though.

You should send this info to CD support via email so they are aware if this happens to someone else again...

You weren't by chance using Premiere Pro CC? People were reporting a magenta cast to blown out hightlights.

Having this issue again with Odyssey in 4K2HD ProRes.

I don't recall. But surely you guys can replicate this easily... I haven't heard anyone else say they've had this issue, which strikes me as very odd.

Is it only appearing in that specific 4ktoHD mode using the 7Q? I would want to isolate the problem to know whether it's a Sony issue or a Convergent Design issue. Does it happen in internal AVCHD? Any other modes on the 7Q? It's very likely a sensor issue and Sony's are infamous for having weird colour shifting in the highlights, people are getting solid blue walls on the A7s example. It looks pretty bad in your example but even if it is a sensor problem I think it's very easy to fix in post as the highlights are already blown to white.

The yellow cast does NOT show up on the FS700 display. It just shows as white.

I've only noticed it in 4K2HD. But I haven't used 4K ProRes extensively.

It only pops up while you're pressing auto-WB, right?

I think it's the Odyssey slapping you on the wrist for using auto white balance ;)

AWB to a gray card is pretty standard, no?

You at least want to use AWB to get correct Green/Magenta shift. This is my understanding, anyway...

There is no point in AWB to a card as AWB will change the WB automatically as you move around or light changes even when you don't want it.

Maybe you might not be using the right term here. Setting a custom WB to a card is a standard practice.

Yeah. it's common. But you're also shooting into a grey card and not really capturing footage of the auto white balancing happening. And the yellow goes away after white balance is set, right? If so, then where is the issue? The yellow is popping up while you're doing a setup button pressed onto a grey card that won't even be used in an edit.

I understand bringing it to the attention of Convergent Design as a bug fix, but in your original post you don't really get specific about if it goes away, if it has ruined any of your shots, etc. And people have responded with remarks like "that's scary"... but is it really that scary? It looks like it is happening while you're 1. not rolling, or 2. recording but changing a setting and would therefore be scrapping that 3 seconds of footage anyway (I know I personally don't use sections where I adjust aperture, shutter, etc.)

They should definitely fix it, but if it goes away immediately after the WB is set, it's not going to make me lose any sleep.
