4K2HD, How are you guys exposing?

Hey Guys,

Since 4K2HD has been out for a while now and tomorrow I'm shooting it outdoors on a sunny Los Angeles day, how are you guys exposing it?

I feel like ETTR is not so good for 4K2HD because the highlights blow easier than RAW and is less recoverable. I've generally exposing to the middle. Seems like if it's a little left it's not too bad either.

What been your experience?

Personally I've found when shooting SLog 4k2HD, exposing whites to 80 ire rather than 60 using the waveform with skin tones (caucasian) around 50 rather than 32 and confirming with false colour if necessary, give you best detail in shadows when corrected in post. Otherwise there will be some noise to contend with. Obviously you can use denoiser but method works for me.

I mostly use the Rec 709 LUT and expose to that (using false colour, skin tone highlights @ 70 IRE). The noise seems less bad than in the 4K Raw.

If I want it super clean I'll over expose a stop and bring down in post.

Pushing it a stop over normal levels whilst using the REC709 LUT is another good method for sure. I often flick it over to compare.
