F55: 4K XAVC support added to FCPX

Ah, nuts! I wanted to be the one to break that news. We journalists don't like being scooped ;(

Also note that it requires 10.8.3

I just updated to 10.8.3 so I could run DaVinci on macbook even with the dreaded Radeon video chipset. Yep - you read that correctly.

Im sure Im doing something wrong but I cant get FCPX to recognize the contents of a XDROOT folder (XAVC inside) when trying to import media. Im in 10.8.3 btw.

Hot damn. Been waiting for this. Just picked up my 128 Pro+ card, so can test some 4K XAVC

Here's also hoping that mechanism that auto applies a LUT for Alexa LogC can be made/fooled/manipulated to do same thing for SLog2. That would be amazing.

Hey, I'm having this problem too, all software updates including system. Gonna update SxS driver, hopefully that will fix.

Sony needs to post their plug in. The update caught Sony by surprise as they were planning on coordinating the releases. What we have now is the codec from Apple awaiting plug in fron Sony.

It does seem to have worked some magic, I could never get Resolve to work on my MacPro with an Ati 4870 card, since 10.83 it actually works!

Picked up a new iMac today with 680MX, had been thinking about upgrading. Resolve was pretty much unusable on the MBP.

High hopes for usefulness of 4K XAVC in FCPX since 4K ProRes barely bumps the CPU meter on the 17"

Wowsers. 4K XAVC Clips are truly like butter in FCPX/27" iMac 680MX.

Furthermore, they are live scaled to 1080p out my cheapo Blackmagic Mini Monitor via Thunderbolt, "High Quality" setting without a hitch, can barely tell the difference in speed between 1080p XAVC and the 4K XAVC. It's that good.

It's truly a new age. I'm dumbfounded.

Glad you like that new iMac, Nate. Pretty amazing computer really.

I think the real question is what would it be like on a slightly older Mac. I'll try to make sure I try it on the outgoing 17" MBP before I sell.

My hunch is it will be slower, but usable.

It's quite remarkable that so many to this day still bash FCPX. It's simply an amazing program that grows everyday and I can only imagine where it will be by end of the year. Once people get over calling it Imovie pro and start cutting in it, there really is no going back.

Glad to hear that the F55's 4k is running great on a "consumer" iMac! LOL. Those Imacs are powerful elegant little machines....

4K, even 8K or 16+K aren't much problem for today's GPUs designed for games. XAVC (updated H.264) decoding for 4K is similar to 4 1080p standard H.264 streams- also no problem for GPUs. I would expect a MBP Retina with NVIDIA GPU to also work well.

Hi,
switched my Mac Pro with a fully blown imac last summer...
attached a thunderbolt raid WD 4TB and been workin on it ever since...
best thing, when i have to work at home i just take the raid with me and off i go...
the imac is atruly truly amazing machine.
has me wondering why i should ever upgrade to a macpro again.
we'll see when the new ones arrive, but i think that the sales figures won't be that high...;-)
any chance of posting some xavc clips online? now that we can finally play with them in FCPX???
highly appreciated!

cheers

Well my 2008 8 core MacPro with lowly Ati 4870 card plays back 4K XAVC in realtime with Colour Correction applied! Wow, thanks Sony
