4k will surely end up like 3D, which is something that will come by default. The price between a 1080p and 4k set will only be a couple hundred of dollars and most people will still be looking at 1080/720p broadcast as many are still looking at SD broadcast still now on HD screen. The difference between SD and HD is big, but subtle between HD and UHD at any normal viewing distance. Larger screen have a bigger impact even at 1080p resolution for the perceive immersive experience. Apart from some techno geek and film-makers who will look at a screen at 10 inch distance to look at pixel nearly all consumer won't care about 4k. That is why the price will come down very fast as their is no particular interest and manufacturers will find it hard to put some big mark-up for the 4k feature.
What is more sad is that Companies like Panasonic is abandoning Plasma. I have a 50 inch Samsung plasma screen and it kills any LCD/led tv that I have seen. Give me this type of black level and contrast ratio before any 4k.
