4K Samsung NX 1 now available for pre-order

He's not doing any favors for the camera.

A master cinematographer he ain't for sure. But bless the internet for being so democratic and allow everybody to call themselves an "expert". At least we are getting to see some footage from the camera.

Yes I think you guys should be grateful for Andrew for not only buying the camera but doing tests and uploading it onto the internet for you to see and learn from and doing it for free. It saves you a chunk of change and lets you then armchair quarterback his results. And what does Andrew get out of it - fame and fortune? Who knows. Anyway I own a NX1 now because of him and I'm just getting started with it. My gut tells me it creates better images than the c300, c100, sony fs7, f55, and f5. And that it creates images on par with the Red Epic MX in terms of natural sharpness and color information. That's my gut. And for $1600. Now I'm going to do some real tests and shoot more with it and see where it takes me. All because of Andrew Reid. Some guy in the UK. And I'm not a master cinematographer I'm just a student learning my craft, but a word of wisdom from this 77 year old - all this negativity could go towards something better. Like you guys either shooting stuff or actually sharing something useful vs just being negative Nellies.

+1

Also just purchased the NX1 because of Andrew's videos and the video Ed posted. Can't wait to see what I can get out of this camera.

I'm very glad you have found something to enjoy. Andrew has enthusiasm and boundless energy and detailed knowledge of quite a few things. I've even bought one of my best lenses from him several years ago for which I am grateful. But he can also miss the mark at times and is quite flighty in his pursuit of his goals, trumping the latest camera offerings as THE second coming.

Please don't get defensive about your purchase. If it ticks your boxes, fine. From what I've seen the camera does not for me, and I will defend my right to say so.

And as for sharing, please search for my user name and you'll find a ton of stuff posted (posting a video in the Panasonic GH forum as soon as I done with this reply). By all means have a go at any of it if you feel so inclined. I won't think it negative. It's all part of the process and helps us grow as film makers.

Looking forward to seeing some of your efforts.

Post your stuff stick in the mud. I am old. I dont have time to ask jeeves about your work.

I read what someone here wrote once and I am taking it to heart. We are at a point where it is no longer the camera that can be used as an excuse for poor work. It is now up to the individual to make it happen. I chose the GH4 due to 4K and known tech and so far I am really happy with what I see. I really like what I have seen from the NX1 but since I already have the GH4 I am going to make the best of what I have. Whatever you shoot on, use it to the best of your abilities and great things may happen. Life is too short to be snarky about each other's work. Happy shooting to ALL whatever you use!

Stick in the mud. Watched your Sri lanka video. I like it. But it seems to feel a little too medicial. Too scientific. Not artistic. Also highlight exposure felt like video like hvx200 not as smooth roll off like film. The motion also feels unnatural. And your skintones felt unnatural. Thats just me. How is this helpful to you? You probably think...well who is this eddavid? And his work sucks so why do i care? And also hey i like my sri lanka stuff. He doesnt know what hes talking about. Our opinions are all just opinions. Your sri lanka video is the greatest thing i have ever seen. I thought when i first watched it it was shot on kodak 5219 35mm visioncolor 3 film and graded by company 3. Keep up the good work.

Regardless of which set of your opinions I take to heart, thanks for watching and introducing me to your body of work.

P.S. I always thought Benjamin Button was a fictional character. I guess I'll have to reevaluate my feelings about Santa Claus. :D

Lol! This is just too funny. A tremendous hustler he certainly is but a good cinematographer he ain't for sure. He is just doing the NX1 hustle right know, who knows about tomorrow. And regardless of him I knew from the beginning that this camera was going to be good. I had a chance to check it out on my very own at Photo Plus in New York and knew right away that I was going to get one. And that without any internet hustler having to influence me at all.

How is he a hustler? He has no sponsorship on his site - he doesn't seem to be making money from his site? He seems to me to be a guy who enjoys giving back to the annonying dslr camera nerd community. He does test, he shoots charts, he spends his time and money and risk getting gear right away so you don't have to.

And whether or not you think he's a good cinematographer, that's your opinion, John. Again I'd love to see your work. Oh wait, I just did - Cali Salsa has terrible highlight control (could't you bring in a few lights?) - Is that the AF100 - with those magneta highlights? Wow, that's some of the best af100 footage I have ever seen - how did you blow out highlights that well? Who is your mentor, Michael Chapman - you have that NYC feeling. Congratulations on your collection of vimeo videos. Andrew Reid should hire you to shoot his next videos!

Well the good thing here is that I am not comparing his work, or even yours, to mine, neither claiming in the internet to be an expert on the subject matter. Instead of spending your precious time searching for work that I may or may have not done to blindly defend the dude, spend it looking for the work of real talented cinematographers making a real living from it and not aggrandizing themselves on a self owned website, compare it, and you will probably see the light, well maybe. Again I would never, ever make a camera purchasing decision on his word or his work or anybody else's for that matter. The only two pro's work and word that I truly respect around here is Barry Green's and Philip Bloom's, and I would never make a purchasing decision on their word alone either. It is fine that he hustled an NX1 early on and tested it, but that's about it.

John I have found after my 13 years in the business that there are two styles of Cinematographers - 1. those who come at it from a more scientific perspective and 2. those who come at it more from an artistic perspective. And 3. Most DPs don't like to share online and give back. Some do, but most do not. Maybe they are scared? Or maybe they are too busy or maybe a little of both or that they don't feel like they have to impress camera nerds?

But there are some who are both great artists and great scientists. Including John Brawley. But however, we can learn from everyone and we should be grateful for their work, most of which is free, that they do as community service work. Are they hustlers also? yes, but all freelancers needs to be hustlers. I have an agent, and I hustle more than her myself to get work.

That doesn't give you the right to criticize Andrew when I don't see anything positive you are doing to contribute to the world. Maybe I'm a jerk and you are the Mother Teresa of social activism film. And also you can hide behind not taking responsibility for your Salsa video, but we both know it's you. Because Salsa video John was all over my NX1 test video. And DVXuser John is as well. You're not really that good of a mastermind spy. But that's okay.

Anyway, you're right this is a great waste of time. So why don't you, instead of having nearly 3000 posts on this message board, a glorified BBS, just go back to making Salsa video 2 and try to make a video that looks 5% better this time. Maybe figure out how to control your highlights by using daylight balanced lighting (augment the natural light! that's what cinematographers have been doing for years!) or by using a camera that handles highlights better. Maybe god willing, choose a different angle to shoot the salsa video that doesn't showcase how poorly your camera handles highlights? Or do some power windows and bring down those highlights! Or don't post it under your name or hide the video - make it private so snarky a-holes like me don't judge you based on your salsa video. Now why would I hire you to shoot my next birthday party when I know 40000 other people who could shoot a salsa video a lot better. But maybe that's just me.
