GH4 4k monitor - playback woes.

I just treated myself to a 27inch 4k Dell monitor. Possibly a mistake!

I have a GTX 670 2g. I7 3ghz, 12G of RAM (DDR3) I thought this would play the 4k files no problem... but they stutter like hell. Unplayable in VLC, media monkey has a better stab at it - but painful.

Works fine when down ressed to 1080p.

Is my system just too old? The GTX 670 has display port 1.2 I honestly thought it could play these files OK. Anyone got similar spec systems that can help me here? I need to see if i need to upgrade hardware or if there is something else I am missing.

What OS? In Windows 10 the built in player and edge browser have awesome hardware acceleration that I can't seem to get in any other player. They play 4k mp4s so smooth with hardly any cpu use whereas all other players can't handle the same video since cpu use goes to 100%

Codec being used/speed checked the hard drives?

Tried a few media players so probably not codec specific. VLC usually handles anything in my experience. Just very slow. Good idea re hard drive - I will maybe do a test tonight. it is a standard 72000 1TB job - maybe not up to the mark?

Interesting comment about windows 10 - I am using windows 7. Not too keen on upgrading but if i thought it would help I would be tempted.

Can anyone tell me if a GTX 670 WOULD be expected to handle these files usually or am I pushing it too hard? It is 3 years old - but was quite well thought of at the time.

CPU is probably more important than graphics card. I could play 4k fine without a dedicated graphics card, just using the integrated graphics. I have a quad-core Intel chip at 3.1ghz paired with a GTX 650ti that plays 4k great. GH4 flies are h.264 and the intel chips have Quicksync acceleration to process h.264 files.

Well my processor is a bit old - but it is a i7 950 at 3.06 ghz... so similar to yours?? If so - i am wondering why the heck it isn't playing these files!

I have a VERY similar setup. Intel Core i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX670 and 4K files from my GH4 play back perfectly smooth in VLC. I edit in Premiere and sometimes playback can be a little slow and choppy when playing off of my USB 3.0 external hard drives, but usually it's pretty good, and it's great off my SSD.

Thanks for that info - gave me the knowledge to troubleshoot elsewhere.

David Jones was right - it was the hard drive it was stored on that was the problem (or rather the connection of the hard drive to the system that was throttling it). When i transferred the file onto my local SSD it all runs just fine.

I didn't appreciate that a 1Gigabit connection isn't enough to stream 4k video files in real time. I thought I had future proofed my house putting cat 5 to all rooms from a central server... but nope... looks like I would have needed cat 6 for that!

Thanks everyone for helping.

From what I understand, a gigabit connection is about 128MB/s. What kind of transfer speeds do you get when you just copy a file? A gigabit connection in and of itself should be fast enough. 4K files from the GH4 are max 100megabit/s, which is 12.5 Megabytes/s. Of course there's some overhead, but if everything is configured correctly, the network speed shouldn't be a problem. That said, I haven't specifically tried playing or editing over my Gigabit connection. Maybe I'll try copying a file and playing it from my Mac.

I'm glad you were able to work it out.

This is the beauty of a site like this. There are some very smart and experienced guys and gals here who are willing to share with others, and take the time to help work through problems.

It also makes me a wee bit mad when I see businesses that charge for customer support.

Good Luck!

There is something else going on there. I use 1T external drives through USB 2.0 all the time to play my GH4 4K UHD on a 5 year old i7 920 GTX220 machine. I use Media Player Classic and it works great with Windows 7. I find it hard to believe hard drive speed is even remotely an issue with GH4 footage at 100mbps on any machine.

I have now upgraded to Windows 10 and it's the same for playing locally. WARNING - there is something wrong with this older machine and / or Windows10 when playing video from Vimeo or YouTube since the upgrade. It stutters the images every minute and I haven't been able to find an answer as to why that is going on. Other than that the Windows 10 upgrade has been flawless. All my Solidworks/Surfcam CNC software is running perfectly without having to do a single re-install. Pretty stoked with that. YMMV :)

Cheers,
Pete

Playing over a network is so much more complicated than a direct connection. Theoretical raw network speed is impacted by so many, many factors. You'd have to monitor what kind of throughput you are actually getting.
