GH4 4K Lomo Anamorphic Test

Took a few shots with my Lomo anamorphic prime lenses on my brother's GH4.
Harsh midday sun.
Cinelike D. 4K UHD -> 1080p ProRes.
1080p download on vimeo.

I think the lenses did pretty okay at 4K considering. And downressing to 1080p, it's the sharpest they've ever looked by far.
Focus isn't perfect in some shots because I forgot my smallHD, so i was using the LCD and EVF.

4K grabs:

Thanks for looking, let me know if you have any comments/questions!

I am a fan of Lomos and I have a few of them, but I guess after to be able to compare with modern glass and rather affordable these days:

It is hard to accept it in any way other than as that kinda of special '70s look or anything alike for a period movie as for instance. And at same time hard to accept that softness once we are going far away from centre towards both sides of the frame such as in that example about second 00:52. Much more visible on 4K outcome. Thank you for posting, Ryan. Very elucidative indeed.

E :-)

Thanks for watching Emanuel.
The SLR magic adapter does nothing for me aesthetically though. I need that 2x bokeh.

And once you crop the sides down to 2.40:1, the edge softness is a lot less of a problem.
In 4K, that still gives you a 2592x1080 image, which will get sharper yet on a 1080p finish.

Anyway, glad it was useful to you. :)

True, Ryan. That softness also gives a characteristic look, we can obviously retouch it with the tools we have in hands. And 4K is very valuable to offer room for reframing. Softness wise too, you won't need to be worried with aliasing : D By the way, have you noticed any issue related with your camera?

Wasn't impressed too, still dislike the gh4 picture here, though the anamorphic magic fails here for me at least. But maybe it's because it wasn't shot with the right setting?
I don't own myself but i didn't feel the SLR magic adapter to have much aesthetically character. Though seen much better result with BMPC or BMCC camera... The pictures on this camera is much more filmic, really the gh4 to what i could see right now, is not on the same level to my eye.

But they are just mine... :)

The proof is in the pudding. Post is mandatory where you can have access to any look you want. My focus and concern at same time is essentially IQ purity to downgrade if aesthetically serves me. The opposite is not the same story, though.

Amazing anamorphic gh4 footage. Well done.

I don't know how people say the gh4 isn't cinematic. In the right hands it can look as good as a camera package that rents for one day at the same price of gh4 ownership .

There is tons of Red Epic footage that looks miserable. I hope I don't offend anyone on this forum, but if you have the time watch this:

I don't know how much you will be able to stand, but it might be the worst Epic footage I have ever seen.
