4K FS700 Odyssey 7Q First footage

If this works, to me that's the most important thing with Odyssey 7Q.

How can we get an announcement when this feature gets rolled out?

Dear Alex,

We hope to release a "Road Map" of the various features an what firmware release they will be in.

We have been working on this list for over a week now.

The feature that you mentioned requires a lot of work and a lot of testing. We want it to be as perfect as possible.

And there are some prerequisites to be completed before we release this feature.

So, please stay tuned for a while.

Respectfully,

Hello Dan,

This is my first time posting on the forum. Your consistent updates have led to me reading here more and more often. I am an FS700 owner who just recently upgraded their camera through Sony and could not be more excited for the Odyssey 7Q solution. The 12 bit 4:4:4 derived from the 4K raw bitstream sounds like a pretty spectacular option. Just wanted to take the time to thank you for your open and honest answers. Its unusual to get such direct feedback from a company! You and your team are definitely doing things right. Good luck with the release!

Thanks,
Mo

Alex,

While its my understanding that the 10 bit HD will be an earlier release than the 12 bit, according to the Odyssey 7Q FS700 option page, HD 12 bit 4:4:4 derived from 4K raw is indeed on their radar. Dan has mentioned this a few times in his posts as well, but I don't think Convergent Design is ready to announce a timeline for that. If and when it comes, it will be quite the codec I hope. Pretty pumped!

-Mo

Edit: Clarified that the 12 bit is HD and not 4K

Honestly I'd think that Odyssey web site-published specs are trailing the actual developments, so what Dan says is current.

Hi Dan,
Is it possible in the future to get XAVC-S as a option as well? I only ask as I do use my Cam at events and to get a L-Gop option would be a great option to have as well. Just a thought. Would give the cam even more life for me personally as the file sizes will be even more manageable.

Unfortunately, i doubt Sony will license the XAVC codec to C-D, at this point

Why not? I suppose they'd have to pay for it... How about 2k/4k Prores LT for long form shooting though? That'd still be pretty big files though. Or perhaps another flavor of 4K h.264/MP4? Seems like that would be an awesome option to make 4K really accessible even for shoots that require long record times and small files. Of course they really cant spend all their time supporting every format, but at least one low bitrate and one high bitrate option that works for every shooting mode (HD/2k/4k from 2K/4K raw up to 60fps/240fps) would be ideal. Really makes me appreciate what RED does with their selectable compression ratios, resolutions, and frame rates...

CD's options seem a bit disjointed with not all formats possibly supporting all shooting modes and possibly no different tiers of compression ratios. This is where something like Cineform RAW and adjustable bitrate mjpeg/h264 might be handy...

Cineform RAW also has low bandwidth, so even 5200RPM HDDs could be used (!) to record a 2K stream - I did that with SI-2K camera. This removes CD's current requirement for proprietary SSDs use only.

Is that log encoded 10bit though? That would allow the 12 bit to be spread within the 10bit a little better.

cheers
Paul

Dear Paul,

Yes, it is Sony S-Log encoded. I assume that it will be Sony S-Log 2 encoded but I do not know this as a fact yet.

Thus, the 12-Bits will be effectively preserved into the 10-Bits that the codec allows.

Dear Mo,

Thank you very much.

It was very nice of you to post your thoughts.

With a 4K Raw source, we can create great 4:2:2 footage.

But, to create real 4:4:4 footage, in 4K, one must start with more than 4K Photosites, thus, in this case, more than 4K Raw.

But, make no mistake, this is a great way to record 4K, it will just be in 4:2:2 which is very good.

And it will be log encoded to get the most of the 12-Bit Linear Source while using a popular 10-Bit 4:2:2 codec.

Again, thank you for the very kind words.

Dear Babu,

We would need to more thoroughly investigate, and determine if this would be a popular option.

But to directly answer your question, I do feel that this is possible.

Dear Alex,

Which SSD or SSD's do you want us to support?

Please be specific, Brand/Type/Capacity.
