FS7: 4K doesn't letterbox when played straight from camera on a QUHD TV?

Another beginner's question: so far I've only tried to play back clips straight from the camera through HDMI on my Samsung SUHD TV that were either HD, or 3840x2160; today I just tried to see how a 4K clip would be played back, and to my surprise I didn't see the usual black bars at the top & bottom of the screen. Why is that - is it the TV that zooms in a little, or something must be set in camera?

When played from my PC, they look properly letterboxed. Strange...

Played from your PC, a frame can be any ratio and will be adjusted for the display. Played from the camera it must adhere to a SMPTE video standard, which means it will cutoff the sides to make it UHD. I can't recall if the FS7 has a monitor output setting for letterbox when in DCI mode, but if it does it would likely be in the Monitor Output menu. The Canon C500 has a menu expressly for this adjustment.

Note that if you have an Odyssey7Q+ it will sense the incoming signal and perform the adjustment for you. When receiving a true 4K or 2K DCI signal, there is a menu selection to show the full 17:9 frame or to show a 16:9 enter extraction, chopping off the sides. Whichever display mode is chosen it what is shown on the OLED as well as sent to the video outputs. The recording retains the complete original file.

Thanks Mitch. This makes me wonder what would happen if I chosen to use my nanoFlash for recording proxies/back-up files while shooting 4K (or 2K) internally on my FS7; with the HDMI/SDI1 both set to HD, would the recording be 16:9 with chopped left/right edges, or...? Thanks,

Piotr

The only signal the nano will accept is 16:9. Most likely chopped edges, but it is purely what the camera outputs. The nano doesn't alter the signal in any way.
