48fps or 60fps with a shutter speed of 1/48th.. YES or NO

Can you film at either 48fps or 60fps with a shutter speed of 1/48th.

If so, can I then at a later date extract my 24fps out of that. The reason for this is I want to capture with the live realtime temporal feel of either 48fps or 60fps. Then later extract a 24fps version.

I have done this with ShowScan 65mm film shot at 60fps, however that is film.......

As Toke says, it is impossible to film a frame rate faster than your shutter speed. You can't have done that with film, as it would require a shutter more open than 360 degrees, which simply isn't possible.

Slowest shutter speed in 60p is 1/60th.

Space time continuum would collapse.

I accidentally did that last year. Still trying to dig out of that one.

Hi Barry,
Shutter was 1/125th on the showscan cams. I ment we were making 24fps prints out of the 60fps material.

If I shoot at the 48 fps mode, I can set the shutter at 1/48th; correct on the HVX200?

Can I also import that 48fps footage into a 48fps timeline too coming from the HVX200? Maintaining that temporal rate of 48fps footage....

Well Toke, I am looking at my camera notes from 1990 and it says 1/125th. I also have our data sheet from then and it says 1/125th.

How about the last questions:

If I shoot at the 48 fps mode, I can set the shutter at 1/48th; this function is possible on the HVX200?

Can I also import that 48fps footage into a 48fps timeline too coming from the HVX200 files, all frames will be there? Maintaining that temporal rate of 48fps footage....

Yes you can shoot 1/48 at 48fps.

I don't know about a 48fps timeline; does any mainline editor even offer that?

You can keep the temporal feel of 48fps by shooting in "over 60" mode, but it will have 12 duplicate frames per sequence.

You can extract the 48fps out of the 60fps sequence and have a true properly-spaced 48fps sequence with the exact feel of 48fps, but I don't know what type of timeline you'd need to play it on. AFAIK FCP Cinema Tools can lie to a file and tell it to use a different framerate, right? If so, you should be able to extract the pulldown frames to give you a 48fps file, and then tell CT to conform it to 48fps, and then you'd have everything you're asking for.

cinematools is the best. I used it to take the ultra real looking 60fps stuff and turned it into slow motion 24p stuff.

I think that pappas was asking about having a super reality real time look.. and then making it slow motion later, right? I was thinking of that for a kungfu flick i'm doing. I want to shoot it at 60fps and then use some slow motion stuff when necessary. I also like that ultra jerky precise look.. hope this makes sense. So, could i do that and would it be 60pn60 and then I set it to 24 fps in cinematools?

Also pappas, were you talking about Ben Rock? I knew him from his days here in Orlando. My good buddy Jethro was out there at the DVfest and he got to see the footage that Ben shot at the Motorolla booth.. or something like that. I didn't get to know ben that well, but I was an assistant coordinator on a short he did.. and for a while he and I were sharing a friends sony DVcam. It's a small world. Jethro is going to buy a camera this same month.. Jethro said that Ben really liked the HVX.

Doesn't premierePro handle what ever frame rate? If I remember correctly you can just type the numbers in the frame rate field in project's settings.
FCP accepts only 24,25,30 & 60 (+ntsc equivalents).
