Here's a short we did for the 48 Hour Film Project. We didn't win a single award, but we still had a lot of fun.

Invulnerable

I was the director and I did the 2-D motion graphics. My wife turned all the stills into comics.

We are entering again next year, so we need some critiques so that we can at least win one award.

First thing, I think you bit off more than you could chew for a 48 hour festival.

If you had tried to do a little less and focused on that then I think the end product would have been so much better. The effects were a little less than impressive. The cinematography also needs a lot of work. I did really like the comic strip stills, they were done very well.

I also thought that the story was lacking, especially concerning the girl.

I'm not trying to bash your movie, just completing something like this in 48 hours is amazing! I just think that you tried to do too much. Less effects would have been better. Think Unbreakable. A lot in that movie is suggested, not shown.

I'm just being honest in order to try and get you that award next year!

Cheers,

Mike

That's totally cool. This is what we want to hear. When you say "focus on that", what is "that"? The story line? What would you have liked to have seen more in the story? We should definitely get some better writers.

What should we work on specifically for the cinematography?

Remember we won't get offended. If I didn't want the critique then I would not have posted it. I loved Unbreakable, so I wanted to avoid the comparisons.

I meant, focus on everything. I think you were trying to do so much in so little time that you couldn't really make a quality short. It was doomed to be average and not really stand out. Had you written a story with less effects work it would have freed up more time to focus on the storyline and the visuals of some of your shots.

As for the DOP work... it wasn't bad. A little less depth of focus in some shots would be nice. I also think I spotted a boom mic in the mirror at the end, at least it looks like one.

I also think the music was a little over used.

As I said before, it is still pretty good considering how little time you had to put this together. If you had more time... it would have been much better I'm sure.

I guess the lesson is, be careful how much you try to do in so little time.

Your wife did a good job turning the stills into comics! What methods did she do to achieve that? I would say you guys did bite off more than you could chew for a 48 hour film project. The lighting wasn't to pleasing to me. I know how the 48 hour film project goes it is hectic my group only had 5 people including me. Here is our film. I liked your idea!
