A Thousand Words - "A young, deaf artist tries his best to pursue a relationship with a girl - despite his inability to hear."

Shot and cut entirely in 48 hours as part of the 48 Hour Film Project www.48hourfilm.com

It was fun little shoot... I think? I can't really remember because of the lack of sleep everyone got.

Anyway, we had to incorporate a few elements in to the film.

Character: B. Coka - "Latte King"
Prop: Air freshener
Line of dialogue: "I don't respond well to threats."
Genre: Silent Film

I hope everyone enjoys it - and if not - please give some criticism. The team is always looking to improve.

Just looking for some constructive criticism on the film. Any comments - negative or positive are welcomed.

Just watched it... umm... it moved along really slow; I just wanted to watch the whole thing in fast forward, and I think I could have and gotten the same out of it.

The story was a bit unbelievable also. I mean, the guy just met this chick, all they said was basically "hello", and he's now stalking her. Then at the end, all he wrote was "hi" on his little notebook, but somehow it worked and he got the girl. ????

Didn't quite get the latte salesman, why was he running after them? wouldn't he just go on to the next house?

Desperately in need of color correction. Music was awfull.

Buttttt... 48hrs is really tough, and you did what you could, and you finished on time, I assume. That's an accomplishment right there, and you should feel good about that. As long as you're out there shooting (unlike myself lately), you'll improve with every project.

Ahh, I just read what you had to incorporate, and it make's a little more sense. These 24/48 hour competitions really baffle me. What do you get if you win?? Shouldn't it be quality over quantity? I dunno... it's late, I'm going to bed.

Keep it up.

hehe that was really cute. Definately one of the better 48 hour pieces ive seen.

sound does kinda suck and it definately does need some CC ( doesn take alot of time ) these are two places in these festivals not to drop out on, yes you have to run and gun, but you got tiem to edit, so do it as much as possible.

very cute story tho, not totally unbelievable, i only say that cause it makes me feel like a kid again watching it. When i was young i always had these dreams of biking up and down a certain girlsstreet from school and then kissing her lol.

good stuff!

Fun! A little slow, but not toooo slow. Congrats! 48 hours is tough!

These are details - just meant as suggestions - they're not things that "didn't work" for me - just details I would have liked to see:

She writes "I like your drawing" - I would have liked to have seen his Art at that point. I didn't know he was an artist except for reading your post. He could have just been writing or journaling. Also, his 'Art' could provide a better depiction of his character and make us like him (or the opposite) right away - a glimpse into his soul?

When she leaves - is she jogging? If so, and that's what she was doing - I would have liked to have seen that. I didn't know why she just stopped by. (Yes, she was jogging - as she did the other days - again, I'd like to see that before she just hangs her head over and says 'hi'.)

Wednesday and Thursday she wore the same jogging outfit. (told you they were details!) ;-)

Music on the first day didn't bother me - after that, though - it did. It didn't seem to match the moods. (especially taking out the trash? kinda sounded like SWAT)

Wed. and Thursday were also kind of the same hook. (He sees her and something happens to him)

I didn't really buy the end - but I think it's because I didn't know enough about him - again, the 'Art' could have helped that - shown that he was a true romantic or something - and then we'd know what she saw in him? Also, the salesman 'at' the scene of the kiss takes away from the moment. He could have wrote the response while still at the door, then saw her and taken off for a nice Chariots of Fire chase down the street! And in that - it would have been nice if there were no words spoken - I mean written - between them. Just a look, a wave and a kiss? As the facade of communicating gives way to romance.

Thanks for the constructive words guys.

I appreciate the time spent watching my little film and giving a short critique.

As far as the story is concerned.... I understand that it is a little far fetched and sometimes unbelievable... and that's okay with me. Like PaPa said how it took him back to when he was a child; I too was trying to achieve the same thing. And of course if we had some more time on the story and project I'm sure we could make the film a tad bit more "Believable"..... but not too much :)

It's great hearing all the kind and constructive words on our short project.

My take on the 48 hour festivals and reasons why they try and get film makers to cram all of the elements in to such a short amount of time is to see how well these film makers deal with such time constraints. Coming up with a decent concept very quickly, think quickly on set (which is very tough sometimes), the ability to edit an entire piece quickly.

As far as prizes... prizes usually differ from festival to festival. It could be as much as a bunch of cash + something that one of the sponsors provide... or it could be as simple as exposure. Like any festival, it really depends on where you submit and what they offer.
