am currently building up my kit to shoot feature news packages / documentaries

am looking for a rig that will include:

mattebox
place to mount monitor and juicelink box
maybe follow focus
shoulder mount or hand help - what ever would be the most stable and not be too massive to pack away or be too heavy
needs to be able to come off a tripod quickly

am considering the following:

this wouldnt quite leave me enough for the monitor after buying the shoulder mount, counterbalance weight and mattebox filters
http://www.cinevate.com/catalog/product ... cts_id=220

zacuto striker + genus mattebox
redrock micro bundle but not mattebox as its too big

monitor

was thinking of the dp6 smallhd (only preorder at the moment) - http://www.smallhd.com/Products/DP6.html

any suggestions would be great!

any feedback from rigs and monitors people are using at the moment would be really useful!

current kit

kata pl220
canon 5d mk2
zacuto z-finder JR with gorrilla plate and frame
canon 50mm 1.4
canon 17-40L
canon 100mm macro is 2.8L
canon 70-200 2.8L is
Tamron 28-75 2.8
miller ds20 + 2 stage solo legs
Manfrotto video monopod

also any suggestions on lenses would be good too

I have the new Liliput 7" DSLR monitor, and don't recommend it. It works fine as a framing guide, and that's about it. I only purchased it as a placeholder to use until the SmallHD DP6 ships. The DP6 looks great. I am not a big Marshal fan.

The 7" Lilliput is actually a very nice monitor for what it costs. Marshall seems to think so also, since they are putting their name on it now.

Agreed. Its nice for the price. And "good enough" is a subjective thing. I shot a short film for a week recently, and the director and other crew kept looking over my shoulder with oohs and aaahs "that monitor is awesome"... The whole time I was thinking its neither sharp enough or color accurate enough to meet my baseline requirements. Grayscale is not very good on it either. Others may feel differently and it might suit many just right.

looking at monitors i think there is no way ill get anything apart from the smallhd dp6.

looks good value with an extremely high resolution.

any thoughts on rigs?

any thoughts on rigs?

I have a frankenrig. A little Redrock, a dash of Zacuto, and a pinch of Chrocziel. I don't think any of the rigs are perfect for everything. So get a rig you can configure in multiple ways. At least that what works for me.

do you have any pix of your rig? would love to see the setup

am struggling to decided whether to go shoulder mount or handheld

This is what i use on my 7D: http://www.evsonline.com/redrock-micro-dslr-field-cinema-deluxe-bundle-v2.html

And if I didn't need a 4X5.6 mattebox, the Genus is the way I would go. The Vocas is also pretty cool with its little permanent front stage.

Also, I haven't seen this monitor with the 5D and it's downrez while recording, but on the 7D its awesome for it's size. http://www.evsonline.com/marshall-v-lcd50-hdmi-5-camera-top-portable-field-monitor-with-hdmi.html

I'd highly recommend the the marshall VLCD series because the peaking and false colors are awesome.

i think im going for something a bit more portable, am considering going for a zacuto target shooter, smallhd dp6 monitor with articulating arm, cage (unsure which cage to go with) with trascam dr100 mounted to it - also have a litepanel micropro and want space to mount that too if needed

i want to fit everything into one bag - shoulder support over gunstock is just going to be too big.

any ideas on which cage would be best?

i dont need 4x5 filters so am thinking about the genus mattebox - just not sure how its going work mounted onto the gorillabase plate from zacuto. i want my rig to be very transferable from tripod to handheld.

Nice Cage, but pricey.
IMHO I like the redrock chest pad a bit more than the zacuto because it seems to slip less of my chest. The redrock alternative to the target shooter: http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/Nano/Stealth
but my preference if i had to go gunstock would be this: http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/Nano/RunningMan

Admittedly i've never used a monitor while on a gunstock rig as I only use gunstock for quickie viewfinder stuff. Are you planning on using a mattebox, monitor and cage on the gunstock rig?

I am planning on using a gunstock with monitor, cage etc

Do you guys think it will be too heavy?

Might have another look at the redrock stealth. Would the stealth easily slot into the zacuto gorilla plate?

Would the stealth easily slot into the zacuto gorilla plate?

essentially, yes. That is if you don't want to use the redrock version that the stealth comes with. Everything is 15mm standard so essentially you could buy all those pieces separately and just exclude buying the nanoBaseplate and instead buy a 4" rod in which you can put in replace of the redrock nanoBaseplate to than attach your gorilla plate (kinda a mind maze sorry). I assume you are doing this because you have the Zfinder with the gorilla plate that has the rod clamp on it?

And yes, I think that will be far too heavy, I know the Marshal 5.6" is light, haven't felt the others. But I've had people complain to me (i work at a film equipment store) when using the 24-70 (beefy lens) genus mattebox, and 5" Ikan monitor with the redrock Event. Again though, depends on your strength and tolerance because I've also had people load stuff up that i would never suggest and than be able to operate for hours.

Spot on, I've got the baseplate for the z finder.

I think I've found my perfect combo.

Zacuto target shooter

With

Ikan half cage
http://www.ikancorp.com/productInfo.php?id=202

Then with have two mini ikan cheese sticks so that hopefully there will be space for tascram dr100 plus monitor ( maybe on articulating arm plus litepanel micropro.

Has anyone used the ikan superfly super kit?

Deos anyone see the being any issues with mounting stuff?

Cheers

Duncan

Going for the zacuto target shooter (gunstock only)

The target shooter is definitely a lightweight alt. to many of the options available--based on your size restrictions, it seems legit.

however, if youre going to go with the superfly, as well, for your cage (as i was going to suggest after reading this thread), you might want to consider something new we're brewing up at ikan. email me if youre interested ryan@ikancorp.com. knocks out cage, 15mm dual rail system, lightweight, portable, built in tripod mount with baseplate, with space for mattebox and follow focus if you wind up going that route.

cheers

Cinema Package.jpgThis is my Proaim and Lilieput monitor rig, cost me about a grand all together with follow focus and all. I don't know what top of the line rigs cost but so far this has never disappointed me or broken down or anything. Just wanted to put in a good word for proaim rigs since people think they are bad just cuz they are cheap... not true.
