422 and S-log

Sorry if this has been answered.

Will the S-log be available as 10 bit 422 out of the SDI? Or is it out of one of the streams on the A/B? (after upgrade of course)
And I could select the LUT's to be recorded as reg 35mbs on the SxS at the same time correct, if needed?

Have been looking into Sound Devices 240 as a recording option, CF cards and SSD is a great balance between now and later, on recording media. Avid and pro res at 10bit 422 would be fine for my use and clients and to have S-log as well would be great. Gemini is awesome but, 444 and trans-coding could be a later endeavor.

Thanks

I also would like to know this. being able to record S-Log 10 bit 4:2:2 to a Pixma like recorder (or Samurai) is one of the 2 key factors that are holding my purchase of this camera. The other one is an adaptor/mount that can control Iris or have an iris blade in it for EF lenses. 4:4:4 is not an option for me. Prores 4:4:4, maybe, 4:2:2 Prores HQ is plenty enough.

If you want mostly 10 bit 422 as pro res or avid mxf, then the Sound Devices PIX 240 looks like the current champ. And on jobs that you want S Log and 4:4:4, I would recommend renting the gemini. I'm going to upgrade my F3 to s log, buy the PIX 240 (once I hear it's all good and not buggy), and rent and or buy the Gemini for the big jobs.

You should be able to do s log 422 easily via single link, rather than dual link. possibly even just straight out of the normal SDI tap. S-log mainly needs a 10 bit container to look right, the chroma is just that, you don't get as much color information at 4:2:2 but it being a 10 bit container allows for the luminance information. the firmware update will also have 5 built in standard LUT's to use if you don't have a DIT to paint the image, so you can get a base reference of where you are at, and then u can turn it off and record log. or you can record it baked in using your full log values de logged into a 709 space.

Alexa can record to pro res HQ in C-log, there is no reason whatsoever you can't record 422 10 bit S-log out of a f3, unless Sony does something in which you can't.

The Sony Pro Twitter acct (run by Mr. Peter Crithary) asked folks yesterday how important 4:2:2 S-Log output was, and the responses according to a later message from him was a unanimous yes. He implied that the upgrade would then indeed have 4:2:2 out (quick decision on their part ?!):

THis is great news for all of us! Thanks Nate! Now, when is Birger coming out with that mount? :)

pretty cool. 422 10 bit log is still a big deal and can cover a great deal of productions. and can go the 444 route when they have the money, subrent, or as per needed for production. options are always a plus.

So will s-log 422 only be part of the $3K firmware upgrade that also gives you dual SDI and 444 or will it be part of the upcoming free upgrade that will enable simultaneous HDMI and SDI?

Thanks Nate. I thought so, just wanted to confirm.

My pre-ordered F-3 is finally coming on Thursday, I think I got the last one from the first batch from Abel.:cheesy:
Does anyone know the release time for the SD 240?

Lenilenapi, The free upgrade will just be for the dual outputs. No S-Log for free my friend...

pix 240 is slated for summer... I'm probably getting one, it was that or the ki mini but I'm really not a fan of relying solely on CF cards for acquisition. Experienced it enough with R1, pretty sick of it. much slower offloads compared to ssd, gb to price ratio is really crappy, overheating CF card readers can corrupt your footage. bent pins...

nice thing about the pix is that if you already got 600x cards for your DSLR you can use them right away, or if somebody has some on set and you need it in a jam. Plus you can do roll over recording from SSD to CF as a safety, and vice versa. I'm really psyched for the pix.

Even if they don't end up changing the upgrade to allow s-log out of single link, You'll be able to with dual link, like I've explained aobut 900 times in this forum. Part of the dual link spec specifies that link A of the dual link is to carry a single link compatible 10-bit 4:2:2 stream. The second stream carries the auxillary chroma information. Set the cameras output to dual link, hook your PIX up to link A, and enjoy your 4:2:2 s-log. Do this all the time with the dual link output of our decklink card to a single link display box

C'mon Sony - adding S-Log to the upcoming upgrade shouldn't be that complicated. Its already available on the Canon!

(making it record differently to SDI & SxS does sound like a trick though)

Speaking if which, if people can arguable use it on a Canon would it be that bad on an SxS card.
Of course the jury is not clear on whether the Canon version works well yet.

There are more features coming with the upgrade than most people know and I'm sure this is why it is taking as long as it is. At NAB I played with the F3 in the Convergent Design booth for a few days and I found a Network and WiFi feature as well as an ND Adjustment feature. Imagine a iPad app that receives metadata and possibly a live feed, and an ISO adjustment via the ND Adjustment feature. We just have to wait.

It seems the US Sony is always behind on these roll outs anyway and we will hear from other countries first when it is available.

After seeing Philip Bloom's 30db gain test with the fs100, i felt this could very well go to the firmware upgrade! Any chance o that?

The FS100 has 30dB gain and the F3 only has 18? I would like to see a higher gain setting for truly dark dark situations. Or when I need a zoom in candleight? Actually I have been shooting handheld in clubs with a zoom and could have used more gain and the noise woul have been acceptable.

What does the ND adjustment do?
