Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

phd... click the link you posted and go to page 4 of 4... there you'll see sennheiser's own frequency response chart for the me66. The space between each line represents 2 db... as you can see from the chart the me66 is down 8 db from 500 to 50 hz.

I don't know why they would state +/- 2.5 db on the specs page and then include a frequency response chart that CLEARLY shows the mics response drop 8 db from 500 to 50 hz.

If you listen to the comparison clip I posted you can clearly hear the me66's total lack of bass response... which is perfectly explained by sennheiser's own chart.

I never said the me66 was crap... I just said that for somebody ABOUT to buy a mic there's a much better choice, in my opinion. If you listen to those clips and think the me66 sounds great then use it. I'm only offering information... what you do with it is up to you.

One thing that I thought was really cool about the 416 is that it came with a print-out of it's frequency response... with the mic serial number and manufacture date. I heard that Sanken includes complete specs on each and every mic... that's when you know a company has confidence in what they're selling.

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

Matt, well I had a post acouple of days ago and was told that you might be the one to ask. Well we're just starting out me and my friends so we're new at this but been reading through this forum. Which has been really helpful. Well the quetion was if this seemed like a good deal the link is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=283238&is=REG.
Also I think I read somewhere that this might need a attenuator It could have been late and was just seeing things or is there any other equipment that we might need. All this is for the AGDVXA. Well nice to meet you.

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

Anarchy... Nice to meet you and thanks for reeling us back on topic! ;D

I checked out that link and that's a fine deal. The best price I've seen anywhere on a 4073a is $530 at B&H... that's for JUST the mic. The short XLR with the right angle plug is perfect for the mic when it's on-cam... and you can pretty much figure that cable at $20... so the shockmount is a freebie.

A good friend of mine bought that kit after I recommended the 4073a to her months ago. Just to be honest about it, that shockmount is nothing to write home about. It's pretty crappy compared to almost anything else.

Click HERE for a much better alternative.

I've got a couple short XLRs but I usually use a 5' with the majority of it coiled up... and I just plug THAT into my camera. Those super-short cables are great for making a tidy connection for on-cam mic, but with a longer cable you have a couple of extra options with brackets and special situations.

So my answer is... it's a fine deal if you want a short cable for on-cam stuff, but the shockmount is mostly crap. It'll get you by for a while, but don't be surprised when it doesn't work all that great.

I'd spring for the PSC... and a couple different lengths of cable. I use Rip-Ties to hold my coils and the excess cable.

For indoor use and totally calm days outdoors the foam windscreen that comes with the 4073a is adequate, but if the breeze picks up at all you'll need a Long Haired Softie at the minimum. Those are $132-$145 depending on where you check. I only use the mics that I've got a full zep and jammer for if it's REALLY windy... just some other stuff to think about, but you can buy a Softie later.

FYI, in case you didn't gather... I recently bought an mkh416 and I've been amazed at how well the 4073a keeps up. I thought the 4073a was a pretty good deal before I compared 'em. Now I think it's a freakin' unbeatable bargain.

As far as the attenuator you can accomplish that in a cable or an adapter that includes a 10db pad... but it depends on your use of the mic. So far I've never needed an attenuator... but most of my work involves normal volume levels of dialog, with a couple peaks from laughter or boisterous personalities, but I've never had to control a concert or really loud practical sounds... such as racing, etc. From my experience you should be able to dial the 4073a down (with a dvx) to a usable level in all but the very loudest situations.

The 4073a tested out to be much more sensitive then the already very sensitive me66, but the 4073a's off axis and rear rejection... being at least TWICE as good as the me66's, makes it perform really well in situations that overloaded the me66. So if anybody says they can use an me66 w/o an attenuator, then they'd be in love with the 4073a.

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

I have the 4073a. Excellent mic. Indistinguishable from 416 for most practical real-world applications. If the sound is going to be that critical, there should be a sound guy there anyways. The boom man's technique is at least as important as the mic in terms of quality sound. The 4073 has also been used by Oscar-winning A-List recordists. It's a pro mic.

On a cosmetic note, the finish on the 4073a scratches up a little too easily, just by using a softie. Grrr. Other minor point is that the 416 will hold it's value a little better that the 4073a. For people buying a mic just for a few projects, that may be significant.

Certain kinds of clients will want a 416. Looks good in the kit and makes everyone feel pro. But it's just reputation. Do a blind comparison between the two mics, and most couldn't tell the difference, much less if they liked the 416 better.

Anyways, soundwise there's little reason to spend $500 more IMHO. It's 98% the same, for 50% of the cost.

Last note: Use good headphones.

I don't know about that. I tought the difference was pretty obvious from the test we've seen. I bet in a movie teather, the difference would scream. That said, I do understand that the at is a great mic, and probably, for video work, should be considered top class.

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

I just want to restate my opening title of this thread... the 4073a is a better VALUE then the 416. I never said it was a better mic... or even as good. I could return the 416 and just get another 4073a... since I got rid of mine last winter, but I'm happy with the differences in the two mics, even at the cost difference. Still the 4073a is the better VALUE.

The point of all these posts is to give an unbiased account of my experience with the microphones I buy, borrow, and use.

I'd happily use a 4073a in the knowledge that it does a good job of keeping up with the 416... If I was in the market for a mic with a budget of $500-$700 I'd still go with the 4073a and be happy. I can definitely hear a difference in these two mics, but the 4073a is a bargain and the 416 isn't. ;)

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

I know, Matt, I was actually reestating that too.

Now, what about this crazy idea, why don't we try to have some comparissons with the CS-1 as well? That way we could have that range of mics pretty much covered (500-1000 dolars), except for the newmann and beyerdynamic. Do you have acess to one, Matt? That would be kickass!

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

I've got a pretty nice bike... yamaha r1. If it sells then we'll have access to a CS1 'cause I'll buy one. In the meantime we need somebody in the Missouri/Illinois area that I can meet to complete the spread.

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

check on r.a.m.p.s , there are probably few neighbours around :-)

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

This is a great thread, and many thanks to Matt for putting up so many great test results in this forum.

I'm still agonizing about which of these two mics to buy, however, and I have three issues with which folks might be able to help.

I'm planning on filming a documentary with a fair amount of run and gun footage with a camera-mounted shotgun. I will be following people shopping, rehearsing dance numbers in small rooms and garages, sewing costumes, and preparing for their performances backstage. I will not be able to control the ambient sound, and I'm sure some of the situations will be quite noisy. I also will probably be more than 3 feet away from the subjects most of the time.

First, will the 416's more aggressive off-axis rejection help me significantly here? Or conversely, could a camera-mounted 416's pickup pattern be so tight that it is difficult to follow a conversation between two people with it?

Second, do the 416 and the 4073a have significant differences in sensitivity when picking up sound from further away (i.e. 6 feet or so)?

Third, I've seen used 416's being sold on eBay, and I'm wondering how sturdy a mic it is in terms of construction. What are the chances that a used 416 will be significantly lower quality than a new 416?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 4073a is a better value then the 416. Listen.

If you can't budget for a booman, you will rpobably pay the price of the cam mic in sound quality sooner or later. But if you want to try to compensate that with a better mic, you can try. It won't render excellent results, but a 416 will get you better sound that the at. The Off axis rejection is *not* that agressive. It's just a higher quality directional mic, but it's not a long shotgun or anything. It's just a 4073 done right. I don't think it's too long for you, I think you'll like it. And about build quality, you don't have to worry about. Those are the most rugged mics availiable, and last a lifetime. MH-416 works for decades and it's a great mic to buy used.
