4-way format shootout

I left for a while but I found something that I thought may benefit you guys in one way or another...I dont know.

It is a 4 way format shootout, comparing well lit, and identical, scenes and locations shot with:

1) Super 8 Vision2 200T stock

2) 16mm I forget what stock it was

3) Super 16mm

4) MiniDV footage which the tester told me was done on a DVX100A.

This is about the fairest test I think I have seen. It doesn't seem to be too biased and the footage from all of them look good IMO. You will be surprised how little difference there is in the Super 8 and the 16mm with recent advancements in film stock. You can draw your own conclusions about the DVX vs. Super 8 or the rest of them.

I know some of you may argue you could have done better lighting, yada, yada, but that isnt the point. These four clips were all shot with the same lighting so the playing field is still level. Maybe these will help some of you in some way.

Have fun and enjoy!

thanks for the link.

That's very interesting. It would be cool to see something like this the the HVX thrown into the mix.

I started out on film and still love it, but I don't know if shooting Super8 is too viable anymore unless you're shooting MOS or are willing to loop all the dialogue later. It's not the look that worries me, but the sound issues. Super 8 cameras are noisy. I'm not sure about the Pro 8 ones, but I can't imagine that something that small with mechanical motion could be too quiet.

You can also pick up an old Arri BL for not too much or rent one for next to nothing, but again those can be some fairly noisy cameras.

I guess it still comes down to what kind of project and whether somebody is using film just to have the cache of using film.

Also, there's the issue of your end usage. I am wondering if a camera like the HVX wouldn't blow up better than all the film cameras?

All that said, for the small-screen, there are certainly a lot of options as this cool test shows.

I did one time see a music video shot outside on Super 8 and it looked amazing.

As it has been mentioned a million times, it's not as much about the equipment, but who's using it and how.
