4 simple questions

New to this camera...waiting for Barry's book to answer a bunch of questions, but until then:

1.)What is the result of switching from 'film cam' to 'video cam' under 'operation type' in the scene file submenu? Exactly how does choosing either of these affect the image?

2.)What does 'SW' mean in 'Auto SW' and 'SW Mode'? It helps me to know the meaning for abbreviations, and I can't figure this one out at all.

3.)Why does the camera add 7.5% setup when recording to P2 media, but not to tape?

4.)Are there any default settings that you would absolutely change regardless of the type of shooting to be done...are there any defaults in the menu as the camera comes from the factory that are just plain wrong out of the box. I'm thinking of MIC ALC set to 'on', but are there others?

I can answer the first one, film cam mode creates a slightly more choppy look, mimicing film more closely, it gives almost a ghosting type of look where the movement gets blurred a little, where as video mode is slightly smoother and sharper. Put your hand in front of the camera and move your hand up and down in the frame; Switch between the two and you should see the difference.

Okay here is my answers feel free to correct me anybody on anything.

I'm not sure what the previous poster was referring to put basically this option sets the camera up for those more familiar with film than video. It give you options such as shutter degrees, frame rates etc that are more synonymous with film than video.

2.)What does 'SW' mean in 'Auto SW' and 'SW Mode'? It helps me to know the meaning for abbreviations, and I can't figure this one out at all.
Software

3.)Why does the camera add 7.5% setup when recording to P2 media, but not to tape?
You can change the IRE setup of each of those in the menu settings by default thats the way its setup by you can change that by going to Camera Setup

4.)Are there any default settings that you would absolutely change regardless of the type of shooting to be done...are there any defaults in the menu as the camera comes from the factory that are just plain wrong out of the box. I'm thinking of MIC ALC set to 'on', but are there others?

Thats a million dollar question, for me not really I have established a few base settings to work from but I pretty much rest the camera each time I use it depending on what I want to achieve.

thanks for the thoughts...interested to hear more

i agree the question about settings is the million dollar question... the beauty of the camera is that it's so versatile and provides options to create so many looks 'in camera.'

i guess with that question i'm really after whether or not there are any factory defaults that leave you'd immediately change regardless... i think setup levels actually could be one of those, but i can't remember for sure.

I was only repeating what I was told and shown by somebody in my film class, with a DVX.

No effect on the image, it affects how the camera functions work. Variable frame rates and a shutter angle in degrees become enabled in FILM CAM mode; interval recording and loop recording and pre-rec and things like that become enabled in VIDEO CAM mode.

2.)What does 'SW' mean in 'Auto SW' and 'SW Mode'? It helps me to know the meaning for abbreviations, and I can't figure this one out at all.
I've always thought of it as SWitch. Because the SW mode affects how the switches work, and the Auto SW menu affects which functions become enabled when you set the AUTO switch to the "auto" position.

3.)Why does the camera add 7.5% setup when recording to P2 media, but not to tape?
It doesn't. It will never under any circumstances record 7.5% setup to P2. That's why the menu choices are 0% or 7.5%A; the "A" means "Analog outputs". Choosing 7.5%A will add setup to the standard-def analog outputs, but not to the recording. And it will have no effect on high-def mode. (note: the LCD/viewfinder are considered analog standard-def displays, so you will see the effect on the LCD/VF).

On tape it will actually record 7.5, which you do not want ever. So don't use the 7.5% setting when working with tape.

Don't remember what the defaults are, but I normally glue the switches on FILM CAM, 24p mode, MIC ALC ON, Master Ped -4, Detail +2 or so, CineLike-V or CineLike-D gamma, and Power Save OFF. I think those are all changes from the defaults.

Totally different. DVX doesn't have a FILM CAM or VIDEO CAM mode. You were discussing the difference between 24p and 60i, but that's not related to the HVX's FILM CAM and VIDEO CAM modes; in fact you can shoot 60i in FILM CAM mode if you wanted to on an HVX.

It's an operational thing, not a video look thing.

Thanks, Barry. Your comments on setup along with the article I just read at Adam Wilt's site clear things up a lot.
