4-pin Firewire a problem?/Pure USB streaming setup possible?

I just got my Dell Core Duo notebook today, and I noticed that it only has a 4-pin Firewire port, but four USB 2.0 ports. So is the Firewire a problem, and is it possible to stream from the HVX over a notebook out on an external harddrive all on USB 2.0? And if no, how can I upgrade to a 6-pin Firewire port?

You could capture from an HVX in standard-def mode via the 4-pin firewire to the laptop and save the files on an external USB2 drive. As to whether you can do that in high-def, that remains to be seen. Technically it's possible, but whether your system supports it end-to-end is the question mark. I can't get it to do so reliably on my laptop, but your core duo is likely to be much faster so maybe it will be able to.

Why? As far as I know the only difference between 4 and 6 pin is, that 6 pin is powered? So I would use a USB 2.0 external drive, but are they reliable or do I risk that the connection during streaming will be cut off from time to time?

USB 2.0 harddisk: I can only find models that need an external power source. Can you list some relieable models in the 300 to 500 GB range, that take the power from the notebook?

By the way, I only paid 1180$ for the notebook, including 1 Gig of Ram an Core Duo processor. I could have taken a processor up to 2.0 GHz, but I suppose my 1.67 GHz Duo uses a lot less energy while being barely slower by 15%.

you will not find a 300gb harddrive that will draw power from the notebook. they all have their own power source, and that is the way it should be. there is no point in underpowering your system when you can just plug in one more AC adapter on site

I know, only 2.5" drives can be bus powered as I learned. So I bought a 120GB 2.5" external drive. There is a 160 GB drive, maybe I can exchange it...
