GH5 4 months in: GH5 ideal picture settings

Has anyone really tested and experimented with the scene settings in more detail?

-3 vs -5 sharpness; NR at 0 vs NR at -5 and it's affect on the processing pipeline.

The GH5 is not the GH4, and the early advice has been to use almost exact same settings. Now that we're a few months in, would love to re-open this discussion for the best picture settings.

I have been using Leeming LUT with -5 Sharp and -3 NR and -1 Color to avoid blowing a color channel; in vlog. I've been too busy shooting to run side by side tests and would love to re-evaluate if these are really the best settings for a great looking image that reduces some of the digital edge the GHx series can be prone to.

Cannot speak about specific settings but the reason why cameras look digital or like video is almost always due to electronic sharpening. The native lenses add their own amount of special sauce to sharpening as well.

If you want the most cinematic image possible you completely eliminate sharpness and NR. Neither exist in the cinema camera world. The GH5 resolves so much natural detail now without the need of any extra electronic help that -5 already looks more detailed than -5 on the GH4. Each person has their own personal taste and thats fine. I'm talking from a pure image processing perspective. Cameras don't add blur filters. The sharpness at -5 is what that sensor is actually seeing. Well I should say closer to what the sensor sees. I'm not 100% sure if -5 completely turns off the sharpness. Any value about -5 is an increased amount of electronic sharpness. Electronic sharpness is digital and leads to video looking images. I personally consider electronic sharpness poison for the soul.

Good thoughts Thomas. There's been a debate previously about turning NR to -5 or not, based on temporal NR the GH5 employs (or something like that). There were also some comments from people treating the GH5 settings same as GH4 and this not being ideal. Not sure about these items or if anyone ever did get around to testing some of this, especially the noise reduction.

Im really disappointed about the minimum sharpening settings. Using analogo lenses I have horrendous haloing in areas of the image when exists hight contrast subjects. Im really thinking in sell the body and return to the GH4 because of this... in the GH4 the image is better looking, more organic, and support best the scaling and visualization in big sizes (cinema)... think that halos being at bigger sizes. Other bad scenario is when you grade the image down in exposure/gamma, the halo become more noticeable.
