4 Channel Mixer and Recorder?

I just tried a tascam dr2d recently. It takes 4 channels, seems to be excellent. Because you are using a pre-amp the minijack inputs (lack of phantom power) won't cause you any problems.
I would choose it over a zoom h4n or dr100 with your choice of setup. Its built in mics are great too for that matter!

Dubdom: By 4 channels you mean you can record 2 channels from an external source and then it doubles it at a lower level correct (dual recording)

Edit: I just came across this review (http://www.gearwire.com/tascam-dr2d-proreview.html)

"The other two dual-recording modes are also very useful. The second mode mixes the onboard mics with the line input to create a single stereo file. The third mode records the line inputs and the onboard mics to separate stereo files. With a few adapters and a little fiddling around with level matching, I was able to patch in a pair of outboard mic preamps and make quad recordings. Very nice!"

So while going through this whole process and seeing the final price for the MixPre and the Dr-2d, It's actually $50 cheaper to just get the Dr-680. The 680 will allow me 8 channels with 4 XLR inputs.

Now my question is. Are the preamps on the MixPre THAT much better to spend the extra $50 for only 2 inputs?
AND is it possible to set the 680 up like the Dr-2d and record a track at normal level AND -6 or -12 on another channel?

The DR-680 sounds fine without the mixer. It's adjusting multiple levels that may be a problem with one knob on the 680. Here's a comparitive video I made checking the character of the pres on the MicPre and the 680. Only with guitar though....

That sounds great, thanks Chadfish. I think I'm going to go with the DR-680 then. Since you have one, is there a way to record the same mic on 2 different channels at different volumes? That way I can have one at -6dB preventing it from peaking?

Or just turn down and record at 24 bit with the limiter on. Don't know about one mic on 2 channels. You'd have to split the signal before it gets to the recorder and use 2 channels I think.

Chadfish: Do you have a bag for your 680? I'm trying to find one that will fit most of my gear (cables, headphones, lav kit) Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to find one that also can carry my Senn ME66 with Zeppelin while still remaining something you want around your neck for 8 hours. I was looking at these two bags.

Petrol PEGZ-1F (http://www.petrolbags.com/Sound-Bags?q=node/102)
Petrol PS-607 (http://www.petrolbags.com/Sound-Bags?q=node/1168)

Any suggestions anyone?

you can always get a splitter cable and send the same mic to two tracks.

i use the pegz2 bag, which is now a bit empty since i don't have a mixer and a recorder(not yet, 680 is coming soon). but if you're just running a recorder i think the pegz1 should be fine.

and if you're going to be bag'n over the shoulder you might want to look into getting a harness, it will save your back/neck a lot of stress and pain on long shoots.

I got the Petrol PS602 to hole my 680, MixPre (with room for a bigger mixer), cans, cables, small mics, lavs etc. No bag will hold a zepplin, but this bag has straps to hold your boom pole off the ground while you are waiting around.

Here's the bag, but with the 680 on a desk. I put everything in it but the mic stand.

It's a big bag, and I'll get a harness for another 100.00 so it's nice and comfortable. I don't do location audio gigs too much, so I usually carry the bag by the handles and just open it up and set up however I'm going to record, and keep the stuff on a table.

Can you guys see the differences between the PEGZ-1F and the PS-601? They have the same internal dimensions. I'm definitely missing something.

There really wasnt much change from the "old" models more like small improvements.
Color of course, also a few more plastic rings for beaners..etc.
A few other small things.

You should know the Pegz bags marked "F" has the side openings reversed.

See how the side opening is on the half AWAY from your body. The standard models have the side openings near your body.

I actually want to get one of these version so I can use my 788T/CL8 combo with the knobs on the BOTTOM rather than the top.
Right now if I had the 788T in the half away from the body all the cables get smashed into the sides.

Hey Guys,

I just received the DR-680 with the Petrol 601 Bag.
Everything looks and sounds great! I also just finished a sync test with a 7D, HPX-170 and the 680. Everything synced up perfectly (stopped at 5 minutes) and it sounded amazing.
Thanks again for all of your help everyone.

Yeah, but can you get that FDIC sign in the bag? :)
