4 Channel Mixer and Recorder?

I use a SD302 in front of a DR-100 and it works great, plenty of gain. I believe the audio circuits on the MixPre are the same as the 302, it just has less features, so you should be good. Use XLR out on the SD and XLR in on the DR-100, at line level.

Good luck,
Grant

I have had mixed results sending line level from my Alphamix to the DR-100's XLR inputs, and found repeatable, very good results feeding the 1/8" stereo line in on the DR-100 from the 1/8" transcription output of the Alphamix. For what you're going to spend on the DR-100 and the Mixpre, you might be better off with a Edirol R-44 alone, and then later, when budget allows, add a used SD442 in front.

Perhaps other can comment about whether the Edirol has enough gain to get sufficient level from something like the Rode NTG-2 or 3.

Don't get me wrong, I like my DR-100 and kept it after purchasing the 680, but interfacing from a mixer to the line inputs on the DR-100 may complicate things.

If the DR100's XLR ins can take balanced, +4dBu line level (didn't think they could) then I totally second that.

Grant, you didn't have to attenuate the 302's output level in the internal menu in order to achieve the proper gain staging? (if you did it's worth mentioning since the mixpre doesn't have that kind of flexibility).

recording and mixing gear

my advise is to rent, pass the cost onto the customer, then you will have the chance to work with the gear before you buy - just a thought

Totally agree, mixer good, but here something that's just happened to me. My alphamix started picking up noise on it's channel 2 direct out, and also blew out the aux. power sends from the internal NT-1. Right now it's on it's way to PSC for repair. Although they have a very quick turn-around time, I'm shipping from Atlanta to California and will be without my mixer for about two weeks. I've still got my DR-680, and in a pinch, I can pick up a job, and although certainly won't have the routing options I'd have with the Alphamix, I could most likely get through just about any gig with the 680 alone. Granted, I have far more flexibility, monitoring, and control with the Alphamix, but could get by if needed since the pre's on the 680 are more than adequate for the level of work I typically book.

And I disagree with skipping a mixer at this point. Mixer good.... Read above to remind yourself why.

So after thinking about this, if I'm going to get the MixPre, it's pretty silly to get the Dr-100. It would be much more cost effective ($200 cheaper) to get the Dr-07. Since I'm going to have to go 1/8" line in anyway, it seems like a no brainer.

Now for the line out on the MixPre to the line in on the DR-07 that is 1/8" plug, will that get me the 2 separate channels? One for Mic 1 and one for Mic 2? Again probably a dumb question.

yeah, its a stereo connection so there's a left and right. so on your mix pre, just make sure one is panned left and two is panned right or vice-versa. there are L-C-R switches above the faders.

If you're sure that 1.5 feet is enough. And what is the cable going to the camera for? Scratch audio to sync with?

Chadfish: I actually changed my order around. I'm thinking now I may get the H4N. (I know lots of flip flopping) If the Dr-100 and the Dr-07 can only take the 1/8" in, I might as well get the H4n and use the MixPre for my booms, then out of the MixPre 1/8" Line into the H4N Line in. THEN I'll be able to use my Lavs on the XLR inputs of the H4N and get 4 separate tracks recorded. If what I'm thinking can be done that is.
Also would you recommend getting longer than a 1.5ft cable if it's only going to be connecting things in my bag? I don't want to have a ton of extra cable in there. I've also ditched the 25ft 1/8" cable idea and am just going to record sound off the camera to sync later with pluraleyes.

....

Best to double check that connecting something to the 1/8" mic in on the H4n doesn't disconnect its XLR mic ins. I don't have one so I don't know for sure but I'd strongly advise checking the manual to make sure before betting the farm on the idea of using both at once.

Oh. I didn't know that the XLR inputs could not take a line level signal on the DR-100. Did you verify that? Because that would be the only reason not to get it. It's a superior sounding recorder as far as preamps go from what I've read.

I'm just curious as to why you ruled out the DR-680 for my own information. Is it missing a feature?

I've tried googling both of these issues and am coming up with nothing. As far as checking the actual manuals, It all sounds foreign to me. I'm afraid even if I did find it, I wouldn't quite grasp it.

I just found this on the DR-100, but I'm not sure if it means the XLR can take a line level signal - anyone?

XLR MIC IN (L,R) inputs

* Input impedance: 1.2 kΩ
* GAIN HIGH setting
o Standard input level: -58 dBu
o Maximum input level: -42 dBu
* GAIN MID setting
o Standard input level: -36 dBu
o Maximum input level: -30 dBu
* GAIN LOW setting
o Standard input level: -14 dBu
o Maximum input level: +2 dBu

LINE IN input

* Connector: 3.5mm stereo minijack
* Input impedance: 1.2 kΩ
* Standard input level: -10 dBu
* Maximum input level: +6 dBu

LINE OUT input

* Connector: 3.5mm stereo minijack
* Standard input level: -10 dBu
* Maximum input level: +6 dBu

While the levels look like it will work, I was getting a distorted (sounding clipped, although the levels were never peaked) sound and waveform when feeding the XLR inputs on the DR-100 from my Alphamix. Once I swithced to the 1/8" line inputs, the problem went away. I would get a nice clean waveform when I switched my mixer to mic level output, but that kinda defeated the goal of staying out of the noise area of the Tascam preamps.

So now, a 680 lives in my bag, and the DR-100 is in my backpack as a backup/handy accessory. I thought about selling it, but I really dig it for recording musicians in clubs and back porch sing-alongs without the obtrusive nature of mics on stands, and my sound bag.
