4.5 minute single shot with FS700 / 7Q

Last weekend we worked on a single, four and a half minute shot film for entry in the World Ski & Snowboard Festival 72hr Filmmaker Showdown. It won us first place. Shot by Derek Heidt @ RVRD. I did the edit + grade.

Posted here as we shot it with the FS700 + 7Q (2k RAW @ 60fps), stabilized by a Mövi-like gimbal, and figured people would be interested in seeing how well it worked. Lens was a Rokinon 35mm T/1.5, edited in Adobe Premiere CC and graded in Davinci Resolve 10.

Hi! Sounds super cool! Can we see the finished product? :)

id id definetly been wondering if that combination would work.

have been waiting for the 7q to get 4k compressed as well (hopefully up to 120fps). Like to see how the fs700 goes on the snow using the room to stabilise In post and deliver in hd.

any major issues you encountered using the setup? Ssd space/swaps, weight of 7q on top of the gimbal, sunlight on 7q screen (which sun hood is that one? Effective on the snow)?

How did you find grading the raw and highlights on the snow? It's got to be a killer combo if exposed to suit.

Cheers

That's actually the finished film - the 72hr challenge is to make a 3-5 minute short that doesn't necessarily need to be on snow.

SSD space was a concern, which is why we shot it in 2K instead of 4K. With two 512 SSDs we weren't sure if we could get the required number of takes in the bag to make it happen - in the end it took six, so we would've been ok... just.

Grading was tricky. We had to expose somewhere in the middle of the two locations hope for the best, key framing between them. In the end we had some blown highlights but overall things came back pretty nicely.

Sun hood is from Westside AV.

Looked really good, I liked it! Did you have loads of guys doing the handheld or just one person holding the movi all the way through?

Single operator with sore arms at the end of it.

Just got an email to say the festival had jumped the gun on making the film public, so that link won't work until Saturday now. Apologies.

Ahh. This forum doesn't show the embedding link on iphones. If you could also just post the link below the embedded version, more people will probably see it if they are checking the forum on the go.
Look forward to seeing it!

what manufacturer is the gimbal from? seems that you need a line backer as operator. looking forward to seeing the movie

Very nice! A gimbal really opens up that type of shot. I presume the blocking felt more liberating than a steadicam? Certainly single op mode.... Were you at a certain stop for most/all of it? Didn't feel like auto iris... And did you try to control light anywhere or there was just too much freedom of movement with the gimbal?

Nice work.

Wouldn't mind some of the Gimabl details. What was the make of the gimbal? Cost? Where did you get it?

Wow. That's great. Loved it. Very creative use of all the tools.

Which gimbal were you using that could house the fs700? Definitely interested in those details as well.

We shot either f/5.6 or f/8 depending on light - it was a sunny day with scattered clouds so we had to make a guess at the start of the take and stick with it. We leaned pretty heavily on grading to even things out, as there was a 1.5 ish stop difference between out on the path and in the forest. The RAW held up like a champ. A few of the highlights burned out occasionally, but most pulled back okay-ish, and the really bad ones were hidden by some of the overlays and the slight highlight bloom I added. No real opportunity to control light with the large area / time constraints / complete lack of budget we had.

Would love to give you more details about it but my experience with it was limited to a couple of runs up and down the parking lot with it. I do know it's a basically a Movi rip-off that can hold something like 20lbs, from RVRD.com, and I think it costs about $11,500.
