4:3 letterbox blowup to 16:9

Hi guys, I am a loooong time reader of the DVX site and especially the Avid thread. This is my first post though.

I was wondering if some one could help me, I am trying to blow up a 4:3 letterboxed project to 16:9 . What is the way of doing this with AVID that yields the best results

I am running Xpress PRO 5.2.4

is it recomended to go with an external app or plug-in? it is a feature length project.

thanks alot !

Easiest way is to apply a resize effect and stretch it vertically to a figure of 133. That will achieve 16:9. It can be argued that a third party app will give you a better result when resizing, due to algorithms and other mathmatical things that I don't understand, but I always just use the resize effect. That will make an anamorphic 16:9 file.

You could always just keep it 4:3 and apply a 16:9 mask to achieve the look. It all depends on what you're going to do with the film once you're finished.

There are also presets in the Reformat section of the effects pallete as well as a full pan/scan and tilt/scan interface. With letterbox sources you are a bit limited though.
