-3dB: horizontal distortion?

Hi guys,

i recognized an interesting fact: If you close the iris and switch between the gain settings to check the noise-levels, something strange happen at -3 dB.
There appears a kind of distortion i didnt know before: flickering, horizontal white lines... Can somebody explain, why that happens? And does it take a visible effect?
I just wondering, because -3dB should be cleaner, but now it seems to me that 0 dB is the better choice?

Could you check this on your 300, maybe only my cam has this effect....

Per your request I just checked and I don't get any lines at all toggling to -3db. Perhaps record and play back on monitor to see if it's really there.

I was recently shooting in +3 & +6 and in the viewfinder I got terrible noise, similar to the look of hypergain, or +12 in betacam, however, it wasn't there in playback so I wish I had kept the gain on.

I am not thrilled with this viewfinder, my standard def 8 year old betacam viewfinder is much better.

Best regards,

Ned

Ned, thanks for checking it.

But i have to calm down a little bit. Today i had more time to check it. And this strange distortion only appears in the Display, not in the EVF. And as i said, only if the iris is closed and you have a black picture. So everything is allright at the moment. Seems to be an internal problem with the Display....

Yes you are right with the noisy Display/EVF.... But i know that this is caused by my heavy Peaking-Setting.
Unfortunetly i have not often the possibility to check the recorded Material on a good Monitor.... So im still in learning-process to imagine the "real" recorded picture when looking through the EVF...

That was a little bit easier with Betacam High-Resolution-CRT-VFs recording for SD CRT-TVs.... :-)

Thanks again and greetings!
