3D invigorator in AE

A guy I'm working with has 3D Invigorator in after effects. We're not used to it, and we keep getting these weird problems, but I'm not sure what's going on. In after effects, we have a map of the world, and we're going to be putting pins in the map. The pins were created in 3D invig, but when we put them on the map, they don't seem to respond very well to the camera (we're just using the basic 35mm if that helps). They move around the same way as the map does when we move the camera, but at half the speed. They don't STAY on the map. They kinda slide around. I know that they're in contact with the map because I've checked all of the views. Wehn we zoom in, the pin disappears into the map as well. Do you have any idea why this could be happening? I'm so lost.

ALSO, when we get close enough, the pin will start to disappear, as it does in the 3D building plane (I'm not sure what that's called). It's very irritating.

I could be mistaken but I don't believe 3d Invigorator works too well with 3d cameras.
You need to have the Animation version of called ProAnimator to do this.

Thanks. Anyone have an idea of how to do this, then? Can a pin (siince it's a simple thing) be created into a 3D look in AE?

Is your map of the world made in Invigorator? If it's not, then that's the problem.

Invigorator can make 3D objects that operate in a 3D universe--but it's a different 3D universe than After Effect's. AE has all of your 2D layers moving in 3D space, and on one of the those layers is your Invigorator. You can cheat it a little if you make Invigorator use the AE camera, but you still won't get perfect interaction between Invig and other AE layers.

So how to you fix it? Well, take your map of the world and make it a Layer Map in your Invig effect. Now make a plane in Invig and map your 3D world to it. Within the Invig plugin, make your pins and position them on the plane so they're penetrating it. The world map is on this plane, so you've essentially recreated your Map and Pins, but now they all exist in the same 3D universe, You can now use the Invig camera, or keep your AE camera to move around. At least now everything will move like necessary.

Let me know if this makes sense.

Michael.

It does! Thanks! Our map was created in AE timeline, so I guess that's the problem. So can the map be created in Photoshop, then imported in invigorator and used that way? Can you still use a basic 35mm camera for that? Or is there a better camera inside invigorator?

You can use the map you created in the AE timeline. If it's made of a lot of layers, Precomp them all. Then set that precomp as a Layer Map in your Invigorator Plug-in. Make a Plane or square or rectangle in Invigorator, make a new Material, and set the layer map to show on that material. Put the material on the Plane/Square/Rectangle and your map will be there.

You can use the basic AE camera by ticking the "Use AE Camera" box on the Invig plugin, or use the Invig camera. I usually use the AE camera because I can control it better, and if I have other non-Invigorator layers in 3D space they're move relative to the Invigorator layer.

Good luck. I like the idea of the pushpins--might try to make that myself!

The Other Guy

I am the other guy working on this project. I have my soccer field figured out and a decent pin modeled. I am wondering though, is there any way to make my pin interact with my soccer field? What I mean is, is it possible to make where the pin and field meet, to make the field indent a little. Like the pin is actually putting some pressure onto the map/soccer field?

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks,
Kuhndog:grin:

You could use a layer map for a Bump Map and animate a dark area that would define the area of the interaction. Granted, this wouldn't be a "deformation" of the plane, but it would affect the textures and reflections of the surface.

Yeah, not a bad idea. So just duplicate the map in black and white, and make sure the black is the only place where we need pins (eliminating boarders)?
