3D Films I dont get the hype???

Hi guys maybe its just me but I went and watched clash of the Titans in 3D, first time I watched anything in 3d at the cinema, and after the lady had given me some crummy glasses I put them on and half way through started to get a really bad headache, as I took them off I could kind of see the image on the screen some shots were a bit blurry.

Maybe it was the movie I chose but nothing really stood out for me, think I would enjoy watching the movie without the 3d effect. Sometimes some of the characters looked like they were an inch off the screen but thats about it. Id rather avoid 3d promoted movies and watch regular on screen movies without headache and silly glasses. Anyone else think the same or am I the only one? I really cant see the point of 3d. Now they are bringing out 3d tv's with glasses, are these really going to take off?

Hope 3D doesn't become the industry standard in movies, as that would suck for me, perhaps its just a faze and will hopefully pass by...

Film was a flop for me too even without the 3D glasses, weak storyline

Has anyone seen U23D? I don't think it got a wide release. But, I have to say, that was 3D done right! Really great 3D shots all over the place. I mean, watching a concert on TV is always so flat. So, anti-climatic. But, this 3D concert was in a way (only in a way) better than being there because you felt like you were getting a back stage pass to go anywhere from any angle. I mean, really cool stuff. Shots just a few feet over the drummers head, Bono singing on the end of a runway...which felt like he was right there in the theater. And, I'm not even a huge U2 fan.

As Richard said “go see Avatar”… That movie was shot in 3D. It might not prevent the weird head aches…but visually you’ll say wow. To be honest…after the first 10 minutes or so I just got caught up into the story.

The problem is that even Avatar is not a real three dimensional real world experience, only a simulation of 3D.

Like there is a difference between the real world experience when you hear something and the simulation of it, from a pair of speakers with some 3DSurround-Aureal-Mubo-Jumbo Voodoo DSP module.

The hype is killing 3D. People are going to get fed up with it being thrown in to everything and the fitting use of the technology, like Avatar will be forgotten. Which is really too bad. I haven't seen Titans, but I'd say the same about Alice. For now I'm going to be going in cautiously and looking for the 2D version if I don't see the right reviews.

As for the above, I don't see why adding the word 'simulation' makes a problem. Film is always just a simulation, which never stopped us from enjoying it before.

But film never pretended to be a real world experience - it was always the "magic of movies".

The problem is it takes a few years to make a movie, so right now we're getting half ass conversions as the studios try to jump on the bandwagon. By next year we'll be seeing more and more big films shot 3D natively and things will improve. Right now, the only films I'd trust to have high quality 3D are CG animated films. How to Train Your Dragon possibly had better 3D than even Avatar.

We I went into BEST BUY the other day and washed MONSTERs VS ALIENs on the new Samsung 3D LED TV with 3D BlueRay player. UNBELIEVABLE! ! ! The best 3d I have ever seen. 3D animation looks ridiculous. Can't wait to see Avatar on that thing. I will own 1......Yes I shall.

i did the same and it looked great; definitely better than i was expecting. it will probably be a few years for me though, i'm going to wait till the prices come down and there is more content.

People call it a fad, but so was sound at one point. It's being used as a gimmick despite the technology not being refined (the same as sound). Now in the next year or two technology will be at a level where 3D is worth it, rather than 2D movies converting themselves into crappy pop-up books. I for one can't wait, and I love the depth it creates. The only problem is, they have to get out of this gimmick stage and make it a staple. 3D can't be the experience, it should only enhance the experience IMO. Like How to Train your dragon, amazing 3d to compliment a great film.

Now here's my theory. 3D is being pushed not just for the gimmick, but as an act against piracy. They're trying to give people more of a "theatrical" feeling, motivating people to see it in the theatres rather than illegally at home. Why would you want to see Avatar at home when it's out in theaters and you can get the full experience? Also 3D technology is impossible to just film it on opening night and release it online for people to view with glasses. Doesn't work that way. Making something 3d, and making it about the 3D experience gives them control over the film. At least for now.

But it's just a theory.

Samsung just warned a week or so ago that "3d" can make you sick.

"Samsung Electronics has posted an advisory on its corporate web site warning that children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues when viewing 3D content on their televisions.

The company also recommends that pregnant woman, the elderly and anyone under the influence of alcohol should refrain from watching programming in 3D.

Samsung also says that wearing 3D glasses for any other purpose may be physically harmful and could weaken your eyesight.

Also, 1 in 25 viewers are STERO-BLIND meaning in a theater of 50, 2 are likely to see little to no affect of 3D.

And the argument that it's for piracy is BS at the moment because they're still releasing the 2D versions of the films, How long are they going to do that for? and when it's still just "Fake" 3d why should I go to the cinema to watch CLASH OF THE TITANS for "full effect" when it's not even filmed in 3D.

Maybe I'm bias because I get motion sickness. So I'm sure it's great for the rest of you, but I don't want to watch this BS and get sick from it, I got a headache from Avatar when I left the theater and felt somewhat nauseous (not as bad as a theme park ride though, but enough to complain.). I certainly hope it's not the only way to view films in the future. Esp. in the theater because I love going to the theater. I also like to roam the frame which is impossible to do in a 3D film. Than again I also get motion sickness from the blair witch project. I'm okay with video games though, probably because I can choose how fast I'd like to jerk my character around. It's more of my doing and my eyes moving than the thing moving on it's own.

The experience of watching the movie and getting into the story results in my forgetting the entire movie was shot in 3D.

I watched AVATAR and don't remember what made it look 3D, and I wondered why I spent so much.

I don't know. I used to know this guy who didn't remember in pictures and never has. He has to picture or visual memory at all.

I remember the 3D fad in the 1980s. I think I saw two movies in 3D and the fad fizzled out within about two years. I have not seen Avatar, but based on all the buzz about it, I am assuming it must be an improved 3D experience. However, I don't know if this is history repeating itself or if it is here to stay.

I also like to roam the frame which is impossible to do in a 3D film.

I actually found myself roaming the frame a lot more in Avatar 3D than in the 2D version. I feel like in the 2D version I can only look at various parts of the frame, but in 3D I can look around within the frame.

I've only seen one other movie in 3D, It was Ice-Age 2 or 3, I think. Wasn't particularly memorable obviously.

I think 3D is just like any other tool in the box; used properly it can work wonders, otherwise it's just a gimmick.

That's just it. It wasn't real 3D, not like they filmed Avatar. That's the difference. There's been a lot of 3D crazes, but they fizzled out most likely because they were never that good.

It's my belief that 3D can be here to stay if used correctly. The technology hasn't been applied properly to a lot of movies (heck Avatar and CG movies were the first to properly do it), and some are premature trying to cash in, so they're going back to the technology of the 80s... meaning pop-up fake 3d.

The next live action movie to come out using this technology is... the new Resident Evil film... ugh... so yeah... maybe it'll die out...

I'm sorry, but I was only talking about real 3D, not fake 3D. As someone who doesn't get sick, I loved the 3D of Avatar and can't imagine viewing it at home, even on a 3D TV. They're hoping most people will love 3D technology, and as it gives an experience that can't be mimicked at home until they get the 3D blue ray version for their 3D tv.

Why would anyone have wanted to watch Avatar illegally at home in only 2D (if they were even showing it in 2d).

And I keep hearing people argue about the 3D in titans and alice... well yeah it's crap, cause it's not actual 3D! It's cause the technology wasn't there during production, but they wanted to jump on the bandwagon. If anything I'm talking about 3D technology in the next few years, when it'll be properly shot 3D.

That's just it. It wasn't real 3D, not like they filmed Avatar. That's the difference.
.

Of course it was shot the same way they did Avatar.
They do this for a long time. Every amusement park uses the same technology - including polarized glasses - as Cameron, since over 30 years.

There is nothing new here, only the hype. If you tell people long enough it´s new and groundbreaking they start to believe it. And even better (for the propaganda) they start to believe they actually see it.
