lol this is old, I have a special on one of my t.v. shows from a month and a half ago with this hacked camera system. although at the time it was just a hack now they are turning it into a product,
Nice post none the less. In the original that i did in my technology segment of, my t.v. show(I talk about new technology and give people details and inside angles) it was hacked, it bypass'z one dvx deck the whole sound and video would be recored to one deck so essensially you would have 2 lens (6ccd) (4 mics) 2+2 giving stereo left and right camera record there side of sound. Hooked up to one vcr deck.
Panasonic warrenty is voided with these systems although it might be possable to make a special box that takes the dv(firewire) output of a cam and converts it to be used as an input for another maybe offering a upgrade pack for a dvx...
Sell a hacked dvx with a special bracket and firewire box(that converts signal for use) that way you can by the kit as an add on and not lose your panasonic warrenty with your original cam(it would be unmodified and used as camera/mic, vcr would be bypassed) cheaper and pretty easy to pull off, only one cam to worry about and as easy as unmounting and unpluging firewire plug to use your dvx by itself...
I posted this a week ago... at least you got a response. Uses of this system I guess are pretty limited... I mean how many people say, "I need this to be 3-D, but cheap"?
I am the developer of the 3DVX and 3DVX.2. First I want to thank all of the people who have read about, written about and otherwise taken interest in our project. We have been working for 11 years to develop a high quality 3D camera system and I have been working on the 3DVX for about 2 years. The most recent posting is not old, this is s a new version of the 3D camera, new features are outlined in the press release. I would be interested in seeing the TV segment about the 3DVX, is that available on line?
When I initially posted about the first 3DVX back in November, some inaccurate statements were made by others about it so I would like to dispel any false rumors. This is not just 2 DVXs stuck together as some have implied. This is an extensive reworking of internal hardware and software as well as an extensive redesign of the camera exterior. I prefer to think of it as "pimping" the camera, but by its definition, it is indeed a hack. Neither of the 3DVX cameras have ever recorded onto only 1 tape. Both use dual miniDV decks (internal to the DVX) for the highest quality 3D recording. The new model, the 3DVX.2 does allow for IEEE-1394 recording to dual hard disks or dual external decks. The cameras are genlocked and phase locked. I recently met with Panasonic executives including two engineers from the original AG-DVX100 design team and they were surprised and impressed that we were able to achieve this. The camera is not intended to be "cheap" it is intended to be a high quality, light weight, compact 3D motion picture camera system. Lastly, the camera is not for sale. 21st Century 3D and the 3DVX.2 are available for hire to work with companies or individuals who want to produce high quality 3D. I hope this clears up any inaccuracies. Thanks for your interest in the 3DVX.2, you will be able to see it at NAB in booth SU9969.
As someone who has shot with a stereo realist for years, I know how hard it is to get 3d right, and an order of magnitude more difficult with video. I look forward to seeing it at NAB.
As a matter of fact, Jason came over to the office this week to show this to us and frankly I was pretty impressed with what he was able to do. As he said above, it really isn't a hack job but in actuality an engineering job. Elegantly done to overcome an overwhelming amount of camcorderisms.
He isn't in the market for selling these, but the rental, which has much more commercial viability. Anyhow, our Japanese visitors were very impressed, including one who had been lead engineer in the development of the DVX100. So pretty impressive. Nicely done Jason.
I was referring to a television show i make every week in brooklyn and manhatttan new york. When this new 3d cam news got out i thought it was cool so i put it in my t.v show for 30-40sec talking about it and how its nice to see people taking tech. another step further and possibilities of affordable 3d camera systems for the average hobbiest/video nut.
I'm not really mad at ya, but i wonder are you mad at me? Why?
Oh, my two cents regarding the 3DVX.2...hope they get lots of billables on the modelling/production side of things, because the 3D angle is a bust. They've been doing 3D since I was a kid in what was the 50's...it's like the Roling Stones, trying to make a comeback every few years!
