35mm transfer - squeeze mode?

I have seen the threads discussing 35mm transfer using the Panasonic anamorphic adapter, but has anyone here made a 35mm transfer using the Squeeze mode instead? If so, I would be interested in hearing if you were happy with the end result.

I realize I would lose some resolution going the squeeze route, but I hear using the anamorphic adapter is cumbersome to work with, not to mention the increased DOF.

The only film transfers that I've seen so far from the DVX were shot in 4:3, that's not to say shooting in Squeeze can't yield good results, but the resolution when uprezzing in post vs. Squeeze is slightly better, Barry even includes a footnote about this in the book, recomending it over squeeze for film outs. I've recently switched from always using squeeze to shooting in letterbox then uprezzing for all my widescreen projects as many of them are viewed on a large HDTV. My 2 cents would be to shoot with a low detail level and in 4:3 or letterbox. Hope this helps :)

Hi jqwest. My last short film was shot with the DVX in squeeze mode and was transfered on 35mm afterwards by Technicolor in Montreal. I believe it depends on the type of hardware you use to make the transfer itself. In my case I had the whole stuff color corrected on HDCAM and got it on film with the Arri Laser. I was very satisfied with the result.

I've projected the film in many festivals and, sometimes, it was preceeding features shot on 35mm. I've discussed with many film professionnals who didn't notice it was video. I've heard some say "that was Mini-DV"?

It might have a bit less detail...but that's what I love about it. We do not always need that crazy resolution and I dislike the cleanliness of the 35mm image. And in the end, it all comes back to what you have to say and how you construct your images. But on 35mm it will surely hold all that great color correction information and gets your contrast as strong as it can be on the big screen.
