35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

Well-known member
so I was at Whistler film festival for the last few days (I went there because it was (A) 2 hours drive away (B) showing some footage from ART HISTORY and (C) snowing)

Anyway myself and the DP of Art History (Todd Williams) got a chance to see a 35mm blowup of some sections of Art History - it was presented as part of a forum on Digital Cinematography run by James Tocher (of Digital Film Group in Vancouver) and James kindly agreed to run some 35mm tests for us.

Suffice to say it looked amazing - it was on a 25 foot (approximately) screen (dunno the film stock) and James had only spent an hour or so tweaking the color settings on the film out.

It was shown side by side with blowups from XL1, PD150 and some HD cameras and the shots from the DVX100 (in my opinion) trashed any miniDV contenders.
To my eyes they looked better than some of the blowups from HD (but of course all of this stuff is subjective because all the footage is totally different)

Anyway - just thought everyone might want to know.

I also saw the same footage from DVD on a 42 inch plasma TV and it looked PHENOMENAL...

thatsall for now - sorry for such a useless post since none of these things can of course be shown but there you go...

1.was it uprezzed to hidef first-
2.was it cropped to 2.35:1 or left as 16:9

"sorry for such a useless post..."

There's nothing to be sorry about, this kind of info is very valuable! As far as I'm aware, you're one of the few that has/is actually going through this process so any info is good info even if it can't be quantified.

Looking forward to your DVD!

I agree. There are no uselss posts! UNless it's a post by me in the Cafe.

Re: 35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

yeah I only meant useless in as much as it would be great for everyone to see it so we could comment on it.

as far as tech details of how the blowup was done - I don't know exactly. I know the footage was software uprezzed to HD first (because James does that with all his DV transfers) - obviously no deinterlacing had to be done - I delivered an uncompressed quicktime file (it was either that or give him a targa or tiff sequence)...

oh it was also MOS (i.e. silent) since he was doing a quick freebie and it was an image quality test not a sound test...

I know he did a small amount of color correction (just a black point shift) prior to burning it out to film (but I don't know the model of film recorder used) - will find out and post this info...

Re: 35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

thanks nick! if you could .. the 2 specifics im looking for are :

1. was it cropped to 2.35:1(cinescope) aspect ratio, or left as 16:9 material
2. software used to uprez.

the reason i would like to find out about the cropping is because i would like to crop my film as such for projection, but am wondering how the leftover resolution holds up when projected.

Re: 35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

Question to NICKYBEE:

You mentioned that your colleague uses software blow-up to HD before transferring to 35mm. What software and settings did he use?

Also look at my thread in the Vegas Section! The topic of software HD blow-up is very interesting as HD-footage gives filmmakers a different standing. So I am after the best possible DV to HD blow up.

Re: 35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

If I had to guess, the project was converted to HD using Cinema Tools and Compressor. But that's only if it was edited on FCP4.

Re: 35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

i was guessing avid ..but really its an open book , regardless of the editing system when your handing someone an uncompressed quicktime. they could use whatever software they want to do the upconversion.

Re: 35mm film blowup - DVX100 24pA - ART HISTORY

it was certainly NOT taken to scope...
it stayed in 16:9...will ask for software/settings though
