35mm adapter on the Red One

I do not have any money any time soon to buy a Red One. However, I was looking over on the Red's lenses. I noticed a 50-150mm T3 Red lens is $8,500. So I was wondering, what is the difference between using a Red lens that cost $8,500 on Red One then buying a 35mm adapter and use some cheap Nikon lens? Is there any quality improves by using Red lens over Nikon lens with 35mm adapter?

The reason a RED lens cost $8500 is not all about optics. It has to do with things like better lens housing, declicked exposure stops, integrated follow focus gear, longer focus throw (and accurate focus marking), less lens breathing. In short, it's the difference between a lens designed for cinema use versus one made for stills.

I see. So unless someone is willing to put with all those that you mentioned, then they can buy a Nikon lens, correct? I was browsing around and looks like Red does have lens adapter for Nikon lens, am I wrong?

You can use Nikon on RED or Nikon on adapters. Of course the quality of lenses can vary greatly across the Nikon line as well.

then have a lens mount, you just buy that and slap your Nikon's on, putting a 35mm adapter on the front of a RED is redundant, the Chip in the RED One is already 35mm sized

We use Nikon and Zeiss ZF lenses on the RED all the time, its a great way of using the camera. A few things to think about, they focus backwards, which is annoying (I usualy draw a diagram on my arm to remind me to turn the barrel the other way.

They do breathe a bit, and the apature clicks, but its worth it - the glass in a ZF produces a fantastic image, and zeiss have just released some new (expensive) cinema lenses that use the ZF optics.

All shot with the Nikon 18-35 on the RED.

The zeiss glass is even better, we shot a music video recently with some amazing images, but Im not allowed to release the stills.... yet....

Thanks for posting the pictures. It's really nice. Once I have enough money saved up, I may jump into the Red One band wagon. My estimate is that it may cost me around $25K...assuming I can use my own Nikon lenses.

Thanks, Barry. Nice to know. I'll sure come back to this thread if when ever I have the money to purchase one.

$25,000 would be a very diet red rig, the body is 17.5 on its own, and you need drives, batteries and everything else.

I guess you could get a working red setup for 25k but it would be difficult....

Yes, I realized that's a bare minimum...but I'm not in a hurry to buy it now so I won't worry about it now. Thanks for pointing it out though.

What are your recommendations? ...just curious.

Wait for the new Epic or Scarlet. Buying Red One now is a waste of money...really!

Any speculation as to when those two models will be out and how much it will cost?

If you want the Red One, and you have the money to afford it, buy that. Better to start shooting now than to hold off for something so artificial as a product that has no release date.

I think even the Red One, it's not readily available in any store. Before I purchased my EX1, I checked the Red site and there is a one year waiting list. Not that I have the money to purchase it but one year is way too long for me.

And that's why I decided to purchase the EX1 first...when I have the money as well as when the camera is readily available I will think about buying the Red. Even if I have the money, I do not like to pay for a product that will be delivered to me two or three months down the road. Heck, one of the reasons why I still shop Best Buy despite prices online stores are cheaper is because it takes me 15 minutes to get what I wanted versus waiting for 3 days to weeks for the product to arrive.

RED have said 'it will be shipping next month' several times since the product was announced, a few years ago. I think we really just have to step back, and just wait until it really is shipping. There are so many people that want it, and such a long waiting list, you may as well just forget it for abit, and have another look into it when the camera has shipped to the reservation list, and all the problems have appeared and been fixed.
