35mm adapter for hmc150

I've decided to buy the camera, now the question(s) is which 35mm adapter to go for..

1. Does the hmc150 have the ability to flip the image, or is it just the viewing on the lcd that flips? (concerning the RR m2 encore, which claims that you don't need a flip module for this camera)

2. I have a canon EF 15mm fisheye lens, can this be used with 35mm adapter -
you need to zoom to get vignette-free right? Won't the zoom make the image blury through a fisheye?

3. Which one will fit the hmc best: Letus extreme, brevis, RR m2 encore ect.?
(ergonomics plays a big factor, the lighter and smaller the better)

Thanks

1. From what I understand the LCD only flips the image but it's still recording an upside down image if you don't have a flip adapter.

2. Unsure

3. All three will fit the HMC150, but the M2 will be the heaviest of the bunch with the Letus coming in second and the Brevis last. The Brevis will be even lighter if you don't opt for a flip adapter, but all setups will require rails nonetheless.

Edit: Might as well throw in the SGPro, as well as the Cinemek G35(If you really want a light setup).

It only flips the LCD screen, but it is easy to flip the image in post so I don't see why you would want to use a hardware flip device.

Yes, I presume that you know a fisheye image is distorted though?

Yes

No, but you will reduce the field of view slightly.

Don't know, I use a RNG35 which screws straight on.

You need to consider how much use you will be getting out of an adapter and then what you want to spend. I bought an HMC150 last fall and just recently purchased a RRM M2 last month. I chose the M2 because of its professional look and build as well as its history of great customer support and client base. Plus, the current M2 model is upgradeable from the inside out, so you don't lose out on future enhancements.

I am almost 100% sure that the other adapters will fit onto the HMC150 as well. The nice thing about the camera is that it has a 72mm front element which is the same size as most adapters, so no need for a stepdown ring.

Don't forget, just because you have the money to buy an adapter, doesn't mean you are in the clear. Good quality glass is very expensive and is highly recommended when using a 35mm adapter. So called "economy lenses" will only soften your image more so than the adapter alone, and can result in images with a lot of chromatic aberation. I recommend renting lenses at first to see what you use the most, and how well the images you shoot are resolved with the adapter and lens.

What are you going to shoot? Have you used an adapter before?
The camera comes with a nice lens. Not trying to put you off adapters, I use one, a Brevis from Cinevate and it is excellent and upgradeable . But light, ergonomic and small are not things I would associate with any adapter. I admit to not using the RNG and have limited experience with the SG and the RR and no experience with a Letus. But take a look at any of them. You are adding a tube/box to the front of your lens and then another lens to that. You need a rails setup to support it all. Not iightweight, though you can build a setup to be ergonomic it won't be small.
I strongly suggest you get the camera, use it and see what you get with it first. Then consider some of the "screw on" lenses that are out there. I am sure Scheider and Cavision and 16x9 will or already have offerings for the HMC 150.
If you go with an adapter you will find each has its own special look and advantages. Most have flips available if you want your image flipped, I do it in post because the flip is one less item on the end of my camera. As was mentioned above, good glass is a "Must Have" for an adapter, the faster the lens the better. And don't discount the cost of a rail setup, eventually a mattebox and then a follow focus and .... does it ever end?
In short make sure you need one before you buy one and don't do what many others in the past have done. They buy a setup and use it twice then end up selling it a few months later due to lack of use. Shooting with fixed focal length lenses takes time to set up and execute.
Good luck

I am really interested in that camera and also in cinemek or Brevis adapter. Brian I wonder if you could post a photo of your hmc with the brevis to see how it looks. I understand it 's better to use such adapter with rails bit is it truly necessary ? I mean, can't you use it without it with smalls optics ?
I am looking for an an adapter simple and quick to put on the cam. I saw some clips with the rng 35 which is "run and gun" but I prefer images looks from cinemek and brevis adapter and I know they are light too so...
Thanks for your reply and sorry for my english I am french !:)

" I understand it 's better to use such adapter with rails bit is it truly necessary ?"

Oui, sinon vous risquez de casser les fils sur votre objectif et possibles l'objectif lui-même.

"I mean, can't you use it without it with smalls optics ?"
Non.

zoom VS. vignette VS. sharpness

it all comes into play when you choose an adapter. if you max the zoom all the way into the GG, you will lose sharpness. and if you got an adapter where you have to zoom all the way into the GG, you definitely have a poor design adapter. you want to be far as possible to prevent vignette but at the same time be close enough for you not to lose the sharpness.

a well-designed adapter will do just those thing properly. disregard by SN, thats just a joke. Redrock have great products.

you will not lose sharpness when zooming in the with optical zoom. it is no different than professional zuiss lenses that use zooming on hollywood feature films. the only time you have to worry about zoom losing sharpness is a digital zoom.

Salut Brian,

La meme chose avec moi . Je parle Francais courament , pour ecrire cet une autre histoire .

I am not talking about resolution loss like digital zoom and optic zoom. I am talking about glass, focal length, achromat.... zooming has a lot to do w/ it sharpness or softness.

Let's take my opinion and noobish out of the equation. There was thread I read about phil bloom talking about comparison bt letus and brevis, and how zooming affected on the brevis as opposed to very unnoticeable on the letus. let me find it and i will post it. i forgot where but it was either here or dvinfo.

Thanks for the replies guys,
to those of you who asked what I will be shooting - shortfilms, musicvideos, art projects and so on..
Although I've never used 35mm adapter, I have a fair amount of experience with DSLR shooting and lots of video recording behind me, so the next natural thing is to merge those two.. also I have ef lenses that I want to put in to use, just wasn't sure that the fisheye would work. I think I will go with the RR encore, seems like it has the best a newest features although it might be the heaviest it will also be the shortest (without flip)

Salut Dave, toujour bon se savorin que je ne suis pas seul dans le bateau !

I've been deciding on this for a while. My two main considerations were the SGBlade and G35. While I really like the G35 bokeh more than the Blade, I really like the Blades price. $1600 for the adapter, flip module, rails, mount. The G35 is $1500 just for the unit. They suggest getting Zacuto rails for it, which is $900 I believe. You're getting premium stuff with Zacuto though. But the overall price would be more like $2500 dollars for the G35 + Zacuto set up.

You have to consider the glass you will be using and from what I've seen you either want to buy really nice fast lenses or rent them. It's not about skimping and trying to use a lens that's a 3.5 or something. That'll just cripple you in a lot of lighting situations.

My blade just arrived today for my HMC so far I'm digging it. I had the slower razor in tonight and was surprised with just my house lights at the quality. Can't wait to shoot with some real lighting this weekend and see how it performs under more typical conditions.
