35 mm camera lens for MKII ??? Stupid question?

Hi guys,

I am an EX nikon slave.
I sold my D90 and all my lens to get the MKII and I am so happy because this is a fantastic camera for video, no comparison with the crappy D90 (and the also crappy coming 300s).

I would like to know, what lens should I use to have the equivalent frame as a real 35mm camera? A 16mm lens I heard?? I want to make a film that looks like a cinema movie (I ll have to resolve the 30p issue as well)

Thanks in advance for your answers...

Movie 35mm is closer in size to the GH1 and d90 sensor size...

A 14mm may be too fish eye. If you mean 16mm lens, as in PL lenses, then they'll vignette heavily on the 5D and you'll need to crop down and lose the resolution. Just get a regular 24mm for your wides... although a few good movies like to use 18mm and 20mm alot.

OK thank you for your answer. So 24 F2.8 is enough, that's great it is what I already have.

So this one might be the good one ? EF16-35mm F2.8L II USM
Or should I get the EF24mm F1.4L II USM to have bette DOF?
Or maybe get a EF24-105mm F4L IS USM for the Image Stabilization? Is it really important for shoot and gun with video or it doesn't work so well and it is more a photo feature?

IS definately works and you can tell the difference, but if you've got a handheld/shoulder/steady rig it doesn't matter.

I'd get the 16-35mm F2.8 personally. The low light on the 5d is great, and for narrative work, I wouldn't open wider than 2.8.

The EF 24mm F1.4 is a waste of cash IMO, Shallow depth of field is overrated, mental to use wide open, and as it's full frame it will make your focus puller an alcoholic and beat his children.

LOL !!
OK great thanks for the advice !!
Now I have the choice with two lenses !
It is hard to choose because without IS it will be harder to film without a tripod and I dont want to carry it with me, but 2.8 would be much more beautiful ! It is mad hard to choose... Also I might need to go to 20mm to get wide angle... Please HELP

24-105 is a very very versatile lens

f4 gives you pelnty of dof

if you are RnG you will appreciate beingable to change focal lenghts in one shot

24 is pretty wide, wider will show horizon errors hand held

105 IMO is the longest you can handhold

IS does help even with a rig if your are doing a 'lock off'

IS does bad once you start panning in shot

For money a 24 and 50 or 85 prime might keep you out of trouble

Personally im using 24-105, 14mm, and 50 1.4 most, the latter two are nikkors

Hey Nikonslave have you tried the 300s?

So far the tests that I've seen looked quite impressive but I haven't put my hands on one yet.

Stick with L glass. 24-70 or 70-200. This is a full frame camera so it IS the equivalent frame as a real 35mm camera. People buy Canon for the superior optics!!!!!!

Let me know when canon has a wide angle zoom OR prime that can come close to the 14-24/2.8 G Nikon Zoom.

To the OP: Use a 50mm as your normal lens on Full Frame and work backward.

24 will be wide as all get out. I've either A) Paper Tape masked a 720P/Fake 2.35:1 on my LCD and framed inside of those boundaries (great results, and you can shoot wide open without worrying about things looking too shallow) or B) Work backwards. When I think I would need a 35mm I instead grab a 50mm @ F4. Or say you need an 85mm, then grab a 100mm and shoot at 2.8~4 split or a 135mm ~ 2.8~4 split.

This is if you're trying to emulate S35mm FOV/DOF. It gets pretty close.
